Feeling old today reading that Mel Stottlemyre died. Was my favorite Yankee on the late 60's teams (after Mantle). Looked in my baseball memorabilia stuff and saw I still had this from the 1966 CR Gazette.

What's the story with Machado and Harper? I don't follow baseball all that closely but I figured that by now both of those two would be off the market for some insane megadeal. Instead I'm seeing that the only known offer for Machado is from the White Sox for seven years and 175 million. It's a lot of money for sure but not anywhere near what was expected when free agency started, correct?
Is it just that the interested teams don't want to show their hand yet or is it part of a larger free agency market correction in favor of ownership?

Gonna be a strike soon is my guess

Players did an incredibly ****** job negotiating the last CBA and have more or less put a hard salary cap in place. The big clubs aren't willing to spend and the little clubs still can't afford high priced talent. They are both going to end up signing below market deals with a bunch of opt outs in them. Harper is going to be a National or a Phillie and Machado is going to be a White Sox or Dodger.

I'm already prepared for the 2022 season to be canceled because that labor fight is going to be UGLY. Probably uglier than 1994.

That's interesting, because I think the NFL is headed for a long work stoppage after the current CBA expires following the 2020 season.

Do you think Harper and Machado will trade off long term security for short term deals that allow for maximum flexibility, similar to what NBA superstars have done?

Yep. I think they are going to get as much money as they can through 2021 and then work in an opt out to see if they can cash in when the new CBA goes into effect in the hopes that its more player friendly.

I agree on the NFL as well.

The NFLPA has been advising players to save money for a stoppage since 2017. That's what has always derailed the union in past labor battles. Most players just don't save enough to survive in the event of a long stoppage. I think they're setting up for a long fight this time.

Yanks keep signing NL players and I have to look them up because I don't follow the NL at all. I at least sort knew who Tulo was but seriously had to Google the last two.
