Dry Camping in Ames

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know of places for dry camping with an RV in Ames? I guess I have not paid close attention, but what are the parking lots around the sports stadiums like before and after games. Or Wal-Mart or anywhere else in town at other times of the year?

Just wondering what options there are around Ames or if the powers that be chase you off and away.

It is common to see motor homes parked at North Grand Mall and the south Walmart. I have no idea if they get chased eventually or not. The one place you do not want to park is the old K Mart lot. It is posted that tailgating is not allowed. The city of Ames does not allow camping in any of the parks.

That's all low lying... Can't say for sure but I think it's used for draining/water retention, which is why they never raised and paved it.

Walmart allows it as long as they have the space and there are no zoning restrictions. Sam's Clubs as well. It's best to check with store managers to make sure you're out of the way.

I'm not sure if Sears Holding still owns it or if it was sold but I would imagine that there are liability concerns...
