I also love that Lakes comes here with questions about his house. I met him during the NDSU game and he is an okay guy in person. Sorry, Lakes, didn't mean to ruin your reputation.
So is the siding that bad that it rusted or is your water that bad? Neither thing should cause your house to be rust colored.
Why is he watering his siding? Shouldn’t the sprinkler be aimed at the grass?
I will dust off my old ISU Wood Science (Forestry) degree here. I have no idea why your house would be covered in rust other than high levels of iron in your water. The nails that they use for siding, if your siding is installed properly, are usually not iron/steel due to stain/discoloration issues. Iron based discoloration on wood is generally treated with oxalic acid. I cannot tell you though what the oxalic acid will do to the finish on your siding. NDSU has a great Polymer Chemistry depatment. Call them and ask what Oxalic Acid will do the finish on the siding.
Type in LP Smart Siding preventative maintenance in your search engine. One of the things they highlight is "NEVER let the lawn sprinkler hit the siding". The wood end grains absorb the moisture and damages the siding.

- Ensure that gutters manage drainage as they should, and that sprinklers aren’t watering the siding. Ongoing contact with water can cause discoloration, shorten paint life and stimulate the growth of fungus and mildew.
- Avoid using a pressure washer on LP SmartSide siding. High-pressure washing can cause moisture intrusion, discoloration and damage to the paint.
- A solution of three parts water to one part white vinegar can be used to remove light mold and mildew stains.
- Never use harsh abrasives or solvents on your siding. These can damage the surface or paint.

btw, doesn't really sound like smart siding to me as finicky as it is.
I would find out who your local LP Rep is and ask them.
If it's rust coming from the nail heads, they likely weren't galvanized or stainless as they should have been, and you might have an installer warranty claim if the house is brand new. If it's not the nails it sounds like you have some water issues.
If it's LP's pre-finished siding, putting muriatic acid on it will likely void any factory finish warranty.
I've been siding houses for 17 years and never seen anything like this. Good luck.

At least the house had wheels to keep it off the ground.
What does that mean? There are parts of the highway 20 corridor between Waterloo and Dubuque and NE Iowa that the houses have had ongoing contact with water for the last day or so. So if it decides to rain all day/night you are SOL?
Insurance usually doesn't cover cosmetic damage. It can, but it's an endorsement and most people choose not to purchase it.
Siding that can't get wet? Doesn't sound so smart to me.
