High School Sports Thread

WACO school is offering free admission for students to all athletic contests this school year.
WACO seems like they have strong athletic teams in about every sport year after year, really doing a great job of maintaining that for such a small town. I can remember when there was talk of them and Winfield combining in the 90s, but both have stuck around and are doing well.

Always been impressed with WACO.

Maybe. I’d say MVC with Xavier, Wahlert and Western Dubuque has better top end teams in 3A. RRC definitely has the most good 3A teams (since MVC is mostly 4A), and it isn’t close.

We do have to basically take the western 3rd of the state in most classes and count their wins by about half. The difference in the western Iowa teams and Central/Eastern is pretty stark.
The MVC is a meat grinder in baseball. Those 3 teams in 3A can hang with anybody in 4A and you've got to contend with Cedar Falls, Kennedy, Liberty, Prairie and City High.

Haven't had a chance to listen to the DCG school board meeting yet but apparently the vote to join the CIML was 3-3-1 so more debate and a vote coming on that still. From those who went to or listened to the meeting heard the ones on the board that have their reservations what a lot of "what if's" like what if it means we lose more and that leads to less interest in going out for sports or what if the district does not grow (hard to believe it won't with the rate Grimes is growing right now.)

My oldest kid is starting 7th grade in the fall and sports probably won't be her thing by the time she is in HS is my guess, TBD if my younger kid might be good enough to have a chance to play in HS so it likely won't affect me either way. That being said based on enrollment DCG is already having to move up a class in sports and will have to play CIML teams in the postseason so I don't see a reason not to just go ahead and make the move now. Sure there may be some growing pains from it early but the FB team moved up to 5A last fall and did pretty well and I have no doubt the other sports will be fine too. Kids and coaches want to compete so I doubt any of the reservations about joining are coming from them.

Just another reason why I hate that we elect a small number of people to make these kind of decisions that affect way more people than the ones they represent. From talking with other parents and people in the community I think a vast majority are in favor of joining the CIML and the superintendent and AD have put in a lot of fact based information that was presented to the board that supports the reasons why it's time to make the move.
There are two Grimes individuals specifically that are tanking the CIML talk for selfish, parenting and competitive reasons. One is a decent guy and used to be Mayor. The other is a puppet ***** and he doesn't know anything. Majority of kids and community want the move. The reality is- if they don't make the jump- DCG will end up traveling to Waterloo and Mason City on Friday nights because most LHC schools not named Indianola and Norwalk are done playing them.

Any thoughts on bat regulations changing next year?
If it was for levels other than varsity I’d be fine with it but it is a solution looking for a problem at best. Kids already have choices between end loaded or balanced swing weight bats. If your kid isn’t strong enough to get around with a -3 balanced bat then hit the weights and get stronger.

There are kids that are 120 lbs soaking wet that can swing a -3 just fine. Agree fine for lower levels but no reason to allow it for varsity

The state really needs to step in and do some planning and assignment. You can have some leeway on having conferences with a couple classes and different numbers of teams. It doesn’t have to be as tight as football districts.

Just say conferences have some bounds like min 8 and max 12 teams, can only contain 1 or two classes of teams and/or have some max spread of BEDS. Once you have those bounds you optimize for travel time.
