For those of you with dogs, what is your setup with them when you leave for work?
If yours is still a puppy, make sure they go potty and either close them off in the kitchen, or stick them in their kennel with some water. Otherwise they'll chew the **** out of something.

It took us awhile to trust them but now we just leave them out all the time. Before that they were in Kennels. To each their own IMO. My aunt and uncle (due to my uncle) keep their two (used to be three) Golden's in kennels at night and when they are gone. They are also restricted to the kitchen/living room and there is a baby gate to keep them from going anywhere else in the house.

Kind of excited. Scale said 216 this morning. (It said 262 back in January.)
I'm fitting into clothes I never could before. Goal weight is 190, I think I'm a couple more months away.

Edit: I was 212 at the end of Army Basic Training... when I was 25 years old. I have never been that small since then. Holy ****. Lke, this thought just occurred to me. I could actually attempt to re-enlist in the Reserves, like I've been thinking about... if they'll look past my age (45) my trans-ness, etc. My skills should be valued though, so it's a possibility!! I really miss serving.

We have 2 and they are finally adults but my wife doesnt' trust them enough to have them out while we are gone. I secretly let them stay out whenever she isn't home and I have to run an errand. They do just fine. She wonders why I'm the favorite and why they hate it when I'm travelling

Kind of depends a bit on the dog. With both of ours, we crated when gone for about first six months, then let them roam house after. My niece’s dog stays with us a lot and did things like jump on the dining room table during dinner and try to chew electrical cords. We left him crated when gone or sleeping until he was about a year. He actually is a very good boy now at age two.

Same with my daughter's dog. She chewed chairs, stereo and computer cords, the works. Until she was about 9-10 months. Now she's perfectly fine to leave alone in the house.

All the puppies our oldest had dog sitting this summer were kenneled during the day. She would also go over every 4-5 hours during the day. Most older dogs she worked with were not kenneled. One client has an older golden and about a 9mo old golden—the 9mo old dog actually gets into the most trouble digging in the yard when they are let out. Thinking about this made me realize how many dogs she took care of this summer!

I had a golden Lab pup that my Dad nearly shot. First, he chewed all the carpet off the steps going from the garage into the house. Mom put hot pepper on it, that stopped that. Then, in the garage, he chewed all the wiring off of Dad's boat trailer. But the last straw was when he chewed the cord to his radial arm saw in half. Eventually he grew out of the chewing stage - they almost always do - and things were normal.

This poor dog lived a hard life. He got in a fight with a badger and got one of his ears ripped halfway off his head. Someone shot him in the leg with a .22 - if my sister hadn't been home, he likely would have bled to death. Then he got caught in a trap down the creek from where we lived.

When he was 2, we went to my brother's wedding in Wisconsin, and our neighbor watched the dog while we were gone. It was in July, and bloody hot. Two days after we left, the neighbor called - in tears - to report that the dog was dead, overcome by the heat. He blamed himself, even though I assured him it wasn't his fault.

But Herb (that was my dog's name) lived a pretty eventful life. :(

Hi, my name is SaraV, I'm...ummm...oldish, and I've never owned a dog. Therefore, not qualified at all to give advice.

This could definitely be just a me thing, but I've been out of school for *mumblemumble*xx*mumblemumble* amount of years. This time of year, when school supplies start showing up to be sold, I get a smidge sad that I don't get to buy any for myself. Maybe it's that I don't have kids. I'm sure carvers and birdy have a different opinion about it. ;)

We had a pair of Brittanies. We let them run in the fenced back yard while we were out of the house. There were bushes around the fences (arbovitae) so they couldn't see out, and rarely made noise back there. Only had a problem once, when the neighbor's free-ranging cat was stupid enough to free-range into our yard, and ended up treed. The dogs kept up a lively conversation under the tree. Apparently someone called the cops because they were barking, and the cops left a (very friendly) note on our door, letting us know that they had entered our yard and corralled the dogs, then chased the cat out of there. Cat never trespassed again that I know of. ;)

I haven't thought about school supplies yet, but I have thought about Z needing new shoes.

I had no idea that the Ames district required dental screenings. There have been ads on tv about one place offering to do them for free.

It is a state of Iowa requirement, I need to get ours in for a vision screening. I just checked and Dentistry at Somerset is doing them free on Fridays in July. Not sure if they have any time left today, may be worth a quick call.

And check Target for clearance shoes. I got my 2nd grader a pair of tennis shoes she can wear everyday for $7.48 plus that week they had an additional 25% off clearance.

That's about what Z's first pair of Paw Patrol shoes were at Target.

Just buy some for yourself. ;) Even though there is no way I need them I usually get a few things for myself. This year isn’t too bad for the kids, some years the requests are many and specific. And I think the HSer found most of the stuff we bought last year that was suggested unopened in her backpack at the end of the year.
