What is Cy's favorite burrito?

I mean, you're not wrong. But if we post about our favorite local burrito, nobody will know what we're talking about.

Are you really going to be interested in how good the food is from Salsa Verde in Batavia?
I would if it was close to as good as El Azteca.

Not that this will really help you but when I was stationed in North Carolina there was a mom and pop shop called Bonfire's. It was a subway for burritos and I have not found anything to compare to it since. I would get

Ground beef or chicken
Rice
Shredded cheese
Queso
Lettuce
Black beans
Jalapeno
I would top it off with one of their hot sauces but cant remember what it was called

Edit: and obviously sour cream

Did you every have the "Beast"? How big is it?

I used to love the chicken burrito with black beans & guac at Pancheros. But about a half year ago or more they changed their tomatillo hot sauce recipe to a smokey flavor. Big mistake. I've been back once to see if they corrected their sin, but they hadn't. So they lost a guy that ate there once or twice a week, if not more.

Now I'll get a steak buritto from Pepperjax or Chipotle instead. I also enjoy a smothered Fuzzy's buritto once & a while. I used to get it smothered with queso, but I sampled the green sauce and may like that even better. The place on Welch makes a good buritto when I'm in Ames.

More on Pancheros. They have made a number of changes over the years for the worse.
  1. They used to have a spicy pork burrito that was grilled and cut fresh similar to the way they prepare steak & chicken. It was my favorite. They replaced it with carnitas, which is also good, but I miss the old spicy pork.
  2. They replaced their bottles of purchased hot sauce with a smokey flavor that I think they make in house. I think the old sauce was a relabeled Cholula sauce. Not a show stopper, but another move in the wrong direction. They used to have a few extra bottles of the old stuff hidden away that you could request, but those ran out long ago.
  3. Bobbing my buritto may be great for most people but not for me. I always get guacamole. Bobbing makes the quac disappear. I also don't like them playing with my food any more than they have to. You can always request no Bob, but the workers no longer know the build technique. They used to be trained to build the buritto by spreading the ingredients out before rolling it. Now they just pile it up and let the bob process take care of spreading it out before rolling it. It's a pain to tell them no Bob so spread it out, and watch many of the newer people get confused. Still wasn't a show stopper.
  4. That brings us to the tomatillo change. Hot sauce is critical to a good buritto. The smokey flavor is not for me. There is no getting around this change, so they lost me as a loyal customer.

The changing of the hot sauce still ticks me off. They had an amazing product and now like you said it just has this overwhelming smokey chili pepper taste to it.

I was just talking about the spicy diced pork they used to have and none of my coworkers remember it. That used to be by go to. I tried to give their carnitas a chance but I'm just not a fan.

Des Moines needs a Free Birds! If you combined their ingredients with the Panch tortilla you would have the mother of all burritos.

Fernando's over by Drake is really good. They had a special during relays few years ago called Porterhouse, named after their then live dog mascot, with chile rellenos and jalapeno poppers inside a burrito (along with normal burrito fillings), maybe fried even?

My new favorite is the Burrito Colorado at Hacienda Vieja in Grimes. Slow-cooked beef in a chili sauce with beans - the cheese, lettuce, etc are on the side. It's a winner!

I'm pretty boring. I like vanilla ice cream and white bread. Once I settle on a restaurant I tend to get the same thing there, over and over. But...I'm interested to know, what is your favorite burrito? Where do you get it and what do you get on it?
Can't remember the name of the truck, but the one that parks by Casey's down on south Duff has an amazing bean & steak burrito. Mmmmmmmmm...

El Azteca is not getting near enough play on here right now. That place is legit.
El Azteca make a great burrito. The first time I had one, I had a smile on my face for the next hour because it was so good. I think I ordered the California burrito, but can't remember. But in my response, I just considered the fast food places.

The Adobada burrito from Abelardo's is another good choice. The marinated pork is very tasty and plentiful. They throw some guac and pico in there, wrap it and call it good. The hot sauce is also very good.

Someone mentioned El Lupita Super Burrito in Cedar Rapids. That is another good place, although I hadn't been there in a long time and my last visit was disappointing. It happens. I'll have to try the Burrito Ahogado that laminak recommended. if I can remember it.

The Super Beef Burrito from Taco John's in the 1980's was great. I liked them so much I duplicated the recipe at home and even looked into buying a franchise. My drinking buddy and i would always make that late run to Taco Johns after the bars. I like them with a little super hot green sauce and a lot of the red hot sauce. Sometimes we got there too late and they had just closed. But they would let us in anyway and serve us free Super Burritos in exchange for beer. My buddy even got a little action with one of the girls that worked there. I don't know what they've done over the years, but they aren't anywhere near what they used to be. I think it may be that they put far less beef in them now than they used to. Now they are just a late night back up when everything else is closed.

There once was a place in Cedar Rapids called Taco Kid that had a Sancho which may be part of the burrito family. Taco Kid predated the rapid growth of Mexican food in this area of the country. Unfortunately the guy retired and the place closed. They sold the equipment to a fast food Chinese place and tried to keep the recipes going, but they just couldn't make them right. I remember meeting the former owner in the Egg Roll House and it clearly saddened him they didn't do them justice.

A similar story will likely be told about Taco Time in Ames when the owner decides to retire. Although I don't get burritos from there, the hard tacos are about the best fast food tacos you can get, because of their crispy shells. The soft tacos are good too. There used to be a Taco Time in campus town and the soft taco was our regular Sunday Night meal when the dorm food service was closed. The Taco Time was on the side street behind Casey's, or in that general area.

any fast food or gringo chain burritos do not even count.

Neither does food from any place has has a steaming hot plate with rice and beans.

West coast taco truck burritos are where its at. Home made salsa, carnitas, carne asada, etc. I have yet to have a burrito in Iowa or the midwest in general worth a damn. That has probably changed with the advent of food trucks and more Mexican people back there....my sister raves about a couple of taco trucks in Perry...which makes sense.

I took my brother from San Diego to a Mexican restaurant close to my house in Cedar Rapids called Adilitas. He loves Mexican food and ordered a Cactus Fajita. He said it was the best Mexican food he's ever had. My next visit there I ordered the Cactus Fajita (lunch size). It is surprisingly good and something I would have never ordered had he not raved about it.

When I am in San Diego (north county) I like to order Carna Asada burritos from some of those local area fast food places. The best ones were at a place called Albertos in Cardiff, Lucadia, Encinitas or one of those towns along highway 101. Robertos was another local chain that had good ones, but not as good as Albertos. I think they ended up buying out Albertos. It has probably been torn down by now.

And by-the-way, the Carna Asada tacos are my go to at El Azteca #2 in Ames.

I only get burritos if it’s quick, so mostly Pancheros. I don’t go to Chipotle out of principle.

If I’m going to a real restaurant, it’s gonna be tacos or some type of seafood (probably both).

I'm not a tortilla fan and so burritos are not my order unless it's the breakfast one at my club or Taco John's.

But my wife would eat a pork burrito from Cazadors in Ankeny with verde sauce any day. It's now my son's thing as well. Neither of them bothers with a menu. I think it's called the burrito Mexicano.

That's a really clever name.

Am I the only one who likes Bandit Burrito in Johnston? Both the beef and pork are quite tasty. If you want something more authentic El Tran in Perry is outstanding. It is in an old Railroad caboose. Right along the Raccoon River bike trail. I haven't got the courage to try the beef head or beef tongue. I stick with the spicy pork or carne asada. I like to wash it down with a mandarin orange jarrito.

Adobo's carnita burrito w/ pretty much everything. I also live near Dubuque so my options are limited.I'll take my own carnitas any day.
