Last night was a little hectic. Daughter has softball game moved out of town, oldest son has track banquet (meeting really) so wife and I split going to these. Wife and oldest two were to leave around 9 last night to fly out of Cedar Rapids at 6 this morning with church youth group. Get a text last night at 7:30 that their flight from CID to oHare has been cancelled. Call American, no more flights out of Cedar Rapids that day. Check Des Moines, would need to send people 6 different set ups to get there. Find something at MSP. Spent an hour and a half just getting new tickets to make everything works.

That finally gets taken care of but sitting on four rooms in Cedar Rapids. Luckily those get booked after 9 pm to keep us from eating those. Everyone just left at 4 this morning. Just me and youngest until monday.

My first place in Waikiki I had Geckos everywhere. But there were always regulars (though stray cats like to catch them for a snack). There were a couple I could even identify and named them.

They’re noisy as ****, though.

what kind of noise do they make???

Friends on FB are headed to Houston. Not sure how the Gilbert crew got there, a friend in MPLS took a bus. We always went by bus, one year I went we were in New Orleans.

They sucked 60gal of water off our field trying to get ready to play a double header last night. Field would have been playable but the outfield was underwater. They had pushed game times back to try and give more time to dry out, had just pulled away after dropping the oldest off when I got the text they were cancelled. Left her there because I had to run the 7yr old to a game in Zearing. It was supposed to be senior night at the HS games, they went out to eat at Pizza Ranch instead. Sounds like the makeup game for Thursday is cancelled because the other team can’t make it work. Went from 7 games this week to 4.

Last time the wife went to the convention it was in NoLa also. We were just dating at the time. Had a group of 6-7 kids by herself. Mostly seniors and a couple girls who got around a lot. The big easy is not where you want to chaperone easy HS girls.

Why does it seem like anything I like they quit selling?
The salespeople that sell the substances you buy on street corners tend to be pretty transient. You should be able to find another salesperson about a block away or you can wait a couple of days and a new guy will be selling where you were looking before.

I'm with Birdie. When did church groups start flying places? When I was in high school, a bunch of friends went on a mission trip to the South on a school bus.

Cornerstone Zearing Church? They will be back Sunday evening.

54% on the Africa thing and I was generally in the same region when I was wrong. You can call me a map nerd.

I didn't take the stupid test cause I would have to totally guess where Wakanda is. Saved an old Rand McNally world map (below) that was with some of my childhood papers in my mom's house. Early 1960's with Belgium Congo and French West Africa.

I didn't realize the French tried to hold onto their territories for that long. Also, thanks to the Dutch for giving me my nearly unpronounceable last and the southern African cities of Bloemfontein and Grootfontein.

In 1972 I went to the Luther League national convention in Houston. There was a busload of us, 25 or so, all high school kids and a couple chaperones. We stayed at the Astroworld hotel right across the street from the Astrodome, which is where all the events were held.

We found out after we got home that there was a man named Dean Corll who, along with a couple young accomplices, had kidnapped, raped, and murdered 25+ young boys in the Houston area.

My mom, needless to say, was more than a little shook up. She told my Dad no more trips like that for my children.

With the chaperones we have, my wife and the pastor, flying was the safest thing for the kids. Both can nap like nobodies business. While I can drive as long as needed. I drove from home to Waco nonstop (besides basically gas and food grabs) in March, my wife becomes of low confidence after 9 pm, and that doesn't include her 10 foot tailgating and addiction to her phone at all times.

There was also 4 of the 9 kids with baseball and softball games to work around, in order to miss the least. With both chaperones each having one. They drove to Boston for their mission trip 3 years ago (skipped the convention) and needed 3x the chaperones to have adequate drivers.

We also have one member who is very generous when it comes to mission and convention trips and will quite often match dollar for dollar anything raised and he would only fly the couple times he chaperoned.
