In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

People's had $.25 wings on Monday nights during MNF. I would put a hurt on those things.

Plus, I think pitchers were like $3 or something ridiculous. You could gorge on wings and blackout for $10

You could also pick a team and when that team scored you got a free shot.

Loved (and never missed!) Twofer Tuesdays at Do Biz!

FYI...still a DoBiz in the skywalk downtown Des Moines.

I miss:

Serpico's (sp?) Pizza (short life on Lincoln Way but was awesome and cheap!)
Dugan's Deli
Fish bowls at Lucillan's (sp?)
Rocky Rocco's
Thumps Up (when on Welch Ave) - G and T night!
Hardees (on Welch) "Dollar Days are here again!" (great for poor college kid)
WC Franks (Stanton Ave). Footlong chili cheese dog.
You must have been at ISU the same years as me. I remember all of those places but had completely forgotten about Serpico’s.

This was a daily occurrence for us. Bonus was even though they scanned your card, it didn't count as a meal. I remember when people found this out the line would be out the door.

Same when people found out the West Hy-Vee self checkout wasn't actually charging your card for a few weeks.

This was a great time. I think for a while, they had something messed up with gift cards as well - like if you had $10 left on your gift card, it would let you charge everything in your cart to the card and not ask for more money.

Ah you're right! I think this is actually what I am remembering.

Original location/original name Flying Burrito (on Lincoln between Sheldon and Hyland) was the greatest drunk food in the history of Ames.

I've been to Fighting on Welch, and while I don't think it sucks, you can't top OG Flying.

Agreed. When it first opened it was like 3 times a week for me. The first employees were great and they were loose on what they would give you and how much.

My end of night drunk food staple history went a little like this: Jimmy Johns, Gyro, Superdog, Flying Burrito, Angie's Breakfast, Jeffs. Occasional trips to the truck stop or perkins mixed in throughout.

Pretty similar to mine. I had more Pokey Stix in the mix, but they were more of a week night drunk and wasn't leaving the dorm/apartment sort of deal.

Truck stop or Perkins were rare occasions, usually saved for post-intramural play. They were the only places it was acceptable to be drunk and sweaty at 3AM on a Tuesday.

So true on the truck stop. Some intramurals like hockey, curling, and broomball ended so late a perkins/truck stop trip was a must.

Just like riding a bike.... We started at 6 am last Saturday morning and ended up at Perkins at 2 am. Even twenty nine years removed from college!!

Not a business, but I miss some of the graffiti art around town.

When I was in school there was a Krang from old school TMNT on a side of the building by the Welch Ave Post Office.

IIRC, the old cross country sign had a "My Spoon Is Too Big" drawing on it.
