CFP Committee Members

We've had one no name on this committee since day one.

Other conferences have ranged from 2 to 3 members including some legends of football history that would obviously dominate any discussion over a Texas Tech AD nobody has ever heard of.

It's a joke. There was nothing wrong with the BCS ranking, just that a 2 team playoff was idiotic. This committee exists in part to guarantee Ohio State and the Big Ten an automatic spot. The first few rankings this year have been pretty decent but look for Ohio State or Penn State to make a gigantic leap into the top 4 if they win out despite Ohio State having two blowout losses.

It just makes me wonder about the structure of the committee. Why 13 members (seems like a really weird number to land on)? How are they chosen? Is their a guideline to picking members? Do they have to sign agreements about possible bias opinion?

I'm guessing they went with an odd number like 13 so that they won't have any tie votes when they are deciding at the end of the year.

2 each for major conferences
1 each for the minor conferences

= 15

+ one for independents, likely a Notre Dame person

= 16

Add in five journalists. At least one of them, and I hope two, has to be a data journalist.

= 21

Don't give Notre Dame a representative just because they're too greedy to join a conference.

Way too fair and rational to serve the purpose this committee obviously exists for.

You're far too optimistic about their desire to be unbiased. A huge part of the formation of this committee has been the opportunity for them to kiss their own asses.

The Vegas guy said he was basing it entirely off who would be favored in Vegas in a head to head. Cowherd surely got him on there because the results favored OSU.

Edit: For example, he said OSU would be favored by 5 if playing Miami head to head.

Notre Dame was a 3 point favorite at Miami. If OSU went into Miami, at night, on national TV. They would get spanked.

OU dropping to fourth this week does make the committee look biased to the SE. It will be interesting to see if they win out can they make it to #2?

I loved the guy I saw last night discussing Clemson having two road top 25 wins and they are the only team in the country to do that. And I was like yeah, cause OU hasn't beaten two top 15 teams on the road. They don't even know these teams!

It's been said before but they should just let Vegas pick the teams. At least we would know up front that it would be about the money.

I don't understand why fans of a team that isn't in playoff contention are getting so upset over the rankings. Ohio State is not getting in the playoff. Period. Oklahoma will get in as long as they win out. It seems that the one year TCU got screwed has completely warped your view and now you're looking for perceived conference slights everywhere.

Meanwhile, a non-biased site like Profootballfocus has Mayfield, Grier, and Rudolph as the 3 best QBs in the country.

Yeah, because they are, at least in the scheme they are in and Mayfield is the best in the country no matter what system he's in. Holgerson said it best - "Go have those SEC teams prepare for those two offenses (OU and OSU) and see how that goes." It's just incredible to me, the desire for "football guys" to be stubborn football guys and harp on defense all the time. It's 1/3 of the game.

Well for one we know that it damn well guarantees that ISU can't make a playoff if TCU gets treated as they have been. With this setup I'm not sure an undefeated ISU would make a playoff.

I'm skimming the protocol, I doubt I can fully analyze nuts-and-bolts. Introductory portion has a lot of vague stuff (I'll get to that later if time allows).

Among guidelines regarding committee membership and selection discussions:
  • Committee members associated with any team under consideration during the selection process will be required to recuse themselves from any deliberations associated with that team
So that's good. But apparently it doesn't disqualify a member's association with a specific conference.

It's possible the protocol specifies who is able to serve on the committee, but if so, I haven't gotten that far yet.

Actually, from the recent talks it is a very realistic scenario that Ohio State still gets into the playoffs. With a lot of the teams ahead of them set to face each other in the last few weeks. The committee it up to happen anyway. The committee members also individually rank teams 1-30 then merge their rankings, so ISU is still in the discussion in that aspect. ISU and WVU falling out of rankings will give the committee an excuse to drop OU out.
