The fat lady isn't singing yet...

There are two different ways a conference makes money.
One is selling their games to a network. That is based on viewership. The contract that the Big XII has with ESPN and FOX is based on how much those networks can sell commercial space.
The second way is conference networks. Conference networks are based upon amount of televisions or households. They sell the channel to cable and satellite providers.
Then the satellite or cable provider can make it a premium channel and charge an additional rate of that channel.

The issue with the Pac 12 network is that the conference owns the network so in theory if the network has a superior product then the network and therefore the conference makes more revenue because it doesn't have to split the revenue with FOX or ESPN. This is where UT and OU comes in.

Stanford and the Silicon Valley is the epicenter of technology including microelectronics.
UT and Austin is right behind. If UT can merge with Stanford it will be beneficial in the future for the state of Texas. This means jobs, higher property taxes and most importantly additional research in that sector.
If UT would join the PAC 12 it will be because the state of Texas feels like California is the future. Most people have no idea the similarities between the states and moving forward how both states need and should exert themselves as the future of the United States.

Wow, really went in a a lot of directions in this post! let me try and break this down quick and easy!

1) PAC12 Network is a terrible product and has low demand both nationally and on the west coast, which is why its not very profitable.
2) UT and Texas do not change that just by showing up and the conference still deals with late night broadcasts in the, Midwest, and East Coast.
3) Where the F* are you getting the idea that UT and Stanford would merge? This is insane!
4) TX and CA impact on the future of the US seems a bit irrelevant in relation to conference realignment (though scholastic standards are certainly a part of conference affiliation if that is what your point was).
5) Conference realignment is driven by football and profit, not the innovation of states.
6) UT does not benefit anymore from the PAC12 than they do currently in the BigXII
7) WTF did that article have to do with anything!

ok im good on this... this thread was supposed to be about a fat lady singing or something!

The PAC 12 owns their own network unlike the rest of the conferences. Even the BIG has allowed FOX to own 51% of their network.
The issue at hand for the Pac12 is that the have become the enemy of the major networks like CBS.

What if they do own their network. Whoever owns it is going to lose money.

Let me change sports for a minute.
In baseball the Dodgers and Yankees can generate more profit than anyone else because of their market plus because they control the majority of their broadcast channel.
Similar to the PAC 12. If they add Texas then their market and more importantly future market will be much bigger than the SEC their real competition.

People have to watch the network for any of this to matter. Texas has more than most any school in the country yet they are a .500 team in football the last few years. SEC football is so much better than PAC 12 football.

But the SEC schools on the most part value football more than academics.
You must understand how much Alabama hates UT. Even with the 2009 game and their recent success Bama's previous winless streak against the Longhorns has made UT public enemy number 1 in the SEC
Not to mention there is a belief that UT turned down the SEC in the late 80's because UT thought they were too good for the SEC.

Too much bad blood in the conference.
This is not even mentioning the Piggies, Aggy, Miss State, LSU and Mizzou.

Because conferences are groups of universities who play football not football teams who teach their players in their spare time.

That UT doesn't want the SEC
The SEC doesn't want UT.

If you would like I can show you an article I have written entitled the Myth of SEC Football.

What makes you think the PAC 12 wants Texas. Yes the SEC is overrated but so much better than the PAC 12

Because UT has been flirting with the PAC 12 since the 1980's and visa versa. Very much like CU but CU's intentions of joining the PAC 12 was clear even if the Big XII survived. UT will only leave the Big XII if the Big XII no longer exist or no longer exist in a way that would be beneficial for UT.
UT has also flirted with the BIG and ACC. The chance of UT joining either conference looks slim at the moment.

How did this thread change from original topic to TX's future in the conference??

They correlate with each other. ISU wins and develops a decent program in the North and begins to take a bigger share of their market in Iowa, Minnesota and Eastern Nebraska then the Big XII has a better chance to survive
If Iowa St continues to be stuck in neutral, fire coaches who have to rebuild the program and either loses or does not gain market share then the chance of Big XII survival decreases.

Out of all universities in the Big XII I think only Baylor and maybe Kansas St face a longer uphill battle in joining another power conference if the Big XII falls apart.

UT would like the Big XII to stick together but if it cannot happen UT will jump ship without a thought about anyone except their university and state.

Is this an accurate summary of the direction this thread has taken?
1. Texas douchebag shows up to educate us on the football.
2. Said genius forgets to leave when the game is over.
3. Said fool is now posting the same conference realignment crap we've all regurgitated and sifted through 19,000 times.

Is that about it?

ISU can be like KU and stick their head into the sand and say the BIG will take us in. When the BIG did not even take in Mizzou.
I think ISU fans are smart enough to know the BIG for them is off limits unless University of Iowa bends over

Go read the millions of threads we've had on this topic. Then come back and say something original and interesting.

Why would any conference want Texas. They are a pain in the ass. The ruined the SWC, and almost ruined the Big 12. They are the biggest spoiled babies in college sports always wanting more and more from what ever conference they are in. When dealing with Texas it is all about Texas, and not the conference as a whole. You don't see USC, Baba, OSU, Michigan, FSU, and so on causing issues in their conference. They are great schools that form great corner stones for their given conference. Texas is always looking for a better deal.

I enjoy your narrative but I have heard it before from many different fan bases and is not entirely the truth.

UT's first conference was the SIAA. It was more of an association before the NCAA than a conference because it was a conference of about 60 different universities. The association split up into three different conferences: SWC, SEC and ACC to keep travel cost down.
Ole Miss and LSU were supposed to join the SWC but decided instead to remain with Bama and the SEC.
SWC survived for well over half a century and before professional football in Texas you would not have found a more perfect conference. Rivalries, Location, Popularity and Great Football.
Dallas gained a professional football franchise and the SWC was no longer the biggest show in town. It still remained revelvant with great football teams.
Fast forward to the 1980's. The Supreme Court ruled that a school and therefore a conference owns the media rights to athletics and not the NCAA. This created an arms war between conferences to produce the best product. Because the SWC was in only two states and the two states combined at the time may have had about 20 million people the SWC could not survive. Texas started looking around and negotiations began with the SEC. Other SWC got wind of these because of Arkansas and Frank Broyles so they used the Texas Legislatire to withhold funding if UT and then if UT and Aggy bolted. So the Piggies and South Carolina joined the SEC.
PAC 12 was next but Aggy was uncomfortable with associating with Liberal West Coast universities because of their military past and their East Texas fanbase. Plus you had Baylor and Ann Richards at this time.
So the Big XII was formed as a short term home. But because of population UT and the big Big XII schools could not share revenue equally and still compete with the universities in other conferences. In 96 Aggy and Nebraska agreed with this because they had great football programs
