NOTEBOOK: What's going on with Tongamoa?

I don't understand how you couldn't make a 2.5 at a community college. Do these players just absolutely have no desire for school?

I guess if you've seen Last Chance U, you really see how these kids DON'T CARE about school at all.

Do not trash JUCO academics too hard.

I got my bottom kicked by calculus at DMACC back in the day.

Those were some late nights doing problem sets. :(

Ugh same here. I took Business Calc with Wu at the DMACC Ankeny campus and it was the most miserable semester of my college career. Ironically over half of the people in the class were Iowa State students and they took it their because they thought it would be easier. Definitely wasn't the case!

I knocked out my gen eds at DMACC and then transferred to ISU. DMACC is not an easy school and if anything, you have more busy work to keep up with compared to Iowa State. Granted the class sizes are much smaller and you avoid most of the large lecture type classes but the classes weren't as easy as everyone thinks they are.

I had Dr. Woods in Boone. She was the sweetest, most motherly thing ever but pulled no punches on teaching you calculus. I was glad I did it, though -- she had way more ability and time to help individually than any TA in Ames would have had, and she was very good and very experienced at what she did (unlike, again, a teaching assistant at ISU) and, well, was a native English speaker, which made the whole thing easier for everybody to survive.

It was no easier at DMACC, maybe even a little harder, but it better prepared me for some upper-level math, statistics, and economics course and the "teaching conditions" (the situation and the teacher) ultimately made it a more surmountable challenge. Central Iowa having those resources for high school students doing cross enrollment or future Drake and ISU students doing a year or two of JUCO at DMACC before moving up is a heck of a nice to start out.

Cheap, and the quality and expectations of the instruction at DMACC is really high. I will defend my experience there to the death. I came into ISU with ~35 credits, roughly half from AP and half from DMACC, which made killing two majors and a few minors easier. I was lucky to have a lot of those early "weed out" classes (calculus, American history, basic composition, etc.) in a 15-20 person classroom instead of some mega-lecture hall in doing that, too.

I agree, especially with Last Chance U in mind. Just no idea how there is not enough drive to get an average grade to make your other dream come true?

How many of us have never lost weight, or never quit smoking, or never (fill in the blank) and we all have dreams we're trying to fulfill.

And CMC was adamant the Tongo is coming and would be here first week in August. It's in his interview and it's public. Nothing has changed but for people's inability to wait and trust the coach, and inability to read a calendar.

Only reason I passed Business Calc there was because my professor was also the head math tutor... whom I visited multiple times a week for help. I got an A for effort, literally.

I think you are miss reading my message I am not doubting what Coach has said, nor am I a saying it is not true. I just know how these late JUCOs sometimes never make it.... I know the DL seems to have more depth than the past few years, but one more in the depth mix even if he has an uphill battle of getting into shape is only going to make this team better at the end of the year. Until he is on campus and practicing, I am not comfortable with the past kicks to the nads.....

Even if he makes it. I seriously doubt he contributes much this year. I would be tempted to redshirt him.

I don't know if they can afford to. There still isn't enough depth in that front seven where they have that luxury. If there's a 6'5 290 pound linemen who can play then they can't afford to have him watching on the sidelines.

If/when he gets on campus I just hope he's in football shape, because I think he's going to get thrown right into the mix. I do agree that if that's the case, I don't expect much production until later in the season after he's had a chance to get acclimated.

Agreed... if he is in shape, or decent shape.. whip him into better shape and throw him in there. We need more depth.

I disagree, DL depth is too key.... Even if we get 12-20 snaps a game that depth is valuable, they knew the situation recruiting him and know here the teams lack of depth is, I am sure they will get him on the field right away....

True, they might not be able to afford to depending on how they feel about their interior lineman. That's probably why they don't think about redshirting. I can see him playing more as the season progresses but it's most likely going to take awhile.

I doubt our staff is stupid enough to redshirt a two years to play two years guy. Especially one who could potentially be our best DT. He will be eased in just like Park was at QB last year.

It's funny people are still panicking about him making it, when it was known from the beginning he'd be here late July/early August. Coach even just said the other week he's still coming.

He has two years to play two seasons. He ain't redshirting no matter what.

We've seen late arrivals contribute after the mid point of the season before. If he can help your team win a game or two late in the year, you play him. Especially at a position of need like interior DL.

Didn't know he only had 2 years. This seems like a sore spot for you. Are you going to cry?

Not to mention with nagging injuries or worse it may be a huge help to have another body that can come in a contribute during the Big 12 grind.
