Another Female Teacher 'Incident'

Here's my theory: The Teacher is completely insecure young lady. The popular good looking macho dominant alpha students flirted with her and she highly enjoyed it. The alpha males sensed blood in the water, she was too insecure to realize the situation and grew to love the attention the students gave her. The students eventually closed the deal.

I fear this is most likely the case. Not a teacher taking advantage, but rather the students taking advantage of an incredibly insecure girl. Really, why else would she do it. Not to mention "on average" confident 25 year olds who carry themselves correctly do not post seductive pictures of themselves as "sexy cop" on their facebook (or where ever the media retrieved this from).

Just a bad situation all around. 17 year old hormones at work. We've all been there, some of us are still going through it.

Side note: Have you seen the netflix doc The Keepers? Holy hell did I lose a big chunk of my faith in humanity. I have never been so angry as I was during the show.

I have not and from a glance at the wiki page, I probably should not. Does not sound good for blood pressure.

This point of view is beyond ****** up. We do not base laws in this country on attractiveness. Nor are women incapable of using positions of power in inappropriate ways.

Lighten up Susan. I think she's attractive and I don't think she's a criminal. Nothing I've seen in limited readings leads me to believe she exerted her position of power over these young men. Honestly - not EVERY teacher who is only several years older than their "victims" are preying on those innocent souls.

Well the law disagrees with you. But by all mean continue with this asinine reasoning...

Why? They're all different scenarios.

Remember the first big sex scandal teach from like 20 years ago? They just got divorced and had like 3 kids after she went to prison. Clearly there was something more there.

what's the difference if the teacher is a 25 year old "hot" woman, hot man, or hot priest? They are still abusing their position of power and whether it's an innie or outie between their legs shouldn't play into it. If you feel this case was consensual based on the details, then you should still feel that way if gender is the only detail changed. I'm not arguing that every single case of a teacher-student relationship is exactly the same. But I am saying that in this specific case, if all we do is swap genders around, why do you feel it makes a difference? It seems, as @ThatllDoCy points out, that there is a glaring double standard. I read a lot of complaints in comments dealing with sexual harassment/criminal sexual situations that women get off free or aren't punished as harshly as a man would have been in a similar incident. Well, it's not hard to see how that happens.

At 25 she is barely removed from college. A lot of college students post their Halloween costumes on social media including the "sexy (fill in the blank)" variety. That pic could very well have been from a couple years before when she was still in college. A bad idea since things you post on the internet are pretty much there for good? Sure, but unfortunately not at all uncommon and it really doesn't tell us anything about her psyche.

What tells us about her psyche is that she risked losing her job, doing jail time, and doing damage to her future employability just to have sex with multiple teenage boys, when she likely could have had as much sex as she wanted with men that wouldn't have risked all of those consequences. This is not normal. Hopefully the court will get her a pysch evaluation.

From what is known, no, I wouldn't feel any different if sexes were reversed. I would also feel much different if there were something to come out showing that the teacher was leveraging the relationship in some way, shape, or form again, regardless of the sexes. So, I don't think I do operate under this double standard. I will say, though, that if this were a guy teacher, the perception of what's actually going on is changed with a lot of people where they immediately jump to the conclusion that there is abuse of power going on where in this case people just assume the students are the "lucky" ones.

I'm also not going to pretend the desires of high school girls and guys are the same so when sexes are reversed in these situations, I don't think it's necessarily egregious to have more suspicion regarding what actually happened. That's why I think it's very important to figure out exactly how the relationship worked. I guess, in short, there are two separate things to look at for me. One is the relationship itself as in a 25 year old banging a 16 year old and the other is how/why the relationship existed. I posted earlier (her name escapes me) that one of the first public teacher/student relationships just ended in divorce after she spent time in prison and they had more kids. I have to think there was more to that relationship than this teacher using a student. I don't think we really disagree here. I think you're projecting this double standard that does exist onto everyone when that's not necessarily the case.

So it sounds like we would agree then, that the comments here would look very different if the only change is that it was a male teacher. I imagine lots of remarks about shotguns if their daughter were involved, instead of high-fives. It's hard to say from the scant details of this case whether or not the woman was being coercive in her actions. However, what she's accused of is against the law (and likely would have been beaten into her head during college) and quite frankly, I believe the adult in these situations know they have a mental advantage that they can use to manipulate the students involved.

I do think this attitude of "they're lucky" - which very well may be how the three students in this case feel - makes it more difficult for those students who do feel coerced, pressured, or even abused to come forward.

I can also assure you that teen girls can be just as driven by hormones as their male counterparts.

Blame the kids? Really? So a teacher is not responsible because she is insecure? The confident kids who closed the deal are? WHoa

I knew both boys and girls in high school that had sex with adults. All parties were consenting, and nobody was a victim.

In this story, without knowing either sides' motives, it's really hard to say any position of power came into play or didn't. She was a teacher, but that could have just given both sides the opportunity to know each other. Or, she could have just as easily have used her position to her advantage. You can paint whatever picture you want to suit your agenda. Bottom line is she broke the law and deserved to lose her job at the very least.

As a father of a little girl, I'll own up to having a double standard in these scenarios. I think had the genders been reversed I would definitely have a different opinion. Most of this is due to the fact that the vast majority of abuse and rape done by our species is carried out by males. Also, for the most part, males around those ages are stronger as well. I can't honestly say "older woman/younger man" creates the same feelings as "older man/younger woman" regardless of how politically correct I try to make my mind work.

There are clearly circumstances where the opposite is true, but it's hard for me to just treat the scenarios equally. As a guy, I feel more inclined to be protective of a younger lady in these scenarios than a younger man. I was raised to protect my sisters, even though they were older than me.

Since it was already mentioned, if the genders are the same, I'd be more protective of the younger person.

You can't give teachers, employers, or coaches the opportunity to have these sorts of relationships with students, employees, or players. The educational, employment, or athletic relationships must take precedence over the sexual relationship. You can't wait until after-the-fact to determine if it was truly consensual in every case.

I dont think anyone is arguing that she should lose her job and be black listed from ever teaching again. I do question if she should be thrown in jail and/or listed as a sex offender for what happened.

I would have thought the age of consent in NC was at the highest 16.

It is hard to know really what to feel about these incidents, but if the sex was consensual I don't really see an issue. If she were using coercive control it would be different.

When it is a male teacher we always seem to see the behavior as predatory, it's an attractive female teacher and everybody is high fiving. We have an odd double standard on sex.

My guess is some parents found out, and considering the name of the school is Rocky Mount, I am guessing it is a religious schools. I am sure that has a lot to do with it.

I figured it was named rocky mount HS since it is located in rocky mount, NC. Maybe I'm just off.

What she did is a felony in North Carolina. She should never teach again, it really isn't that tough.

I don't know what wrong with thinking that. We shouldn't have to view the two as the same considering that men are more likely to actually abuse a position of power for sex. Obviously, that's not to say all are and that's not to say women never do - of course they do - but males and females are different in terms of these things and I think it's fair to take it into account.

Men are creepy. I can't argue with that.
