If Fred really did interview then that makes me think he really will come back to college coaching after the bulls eventually fire him.

Who knows whether this will be a terrible hire or not for them. He's done well at creighton, did well at UNI, obviously just didnt fit in well here. Its so easy for a couple missteps to snowball at any school for any coach, i'm sure there are things he would do differently at ISU today than he did back then, and i'm sure he'll take those lessons to OSU.

Hard to hold ill will for the guy anymore. He moved on and redeemed himself, we got some great years with Hoiberg (and hopefully now with Prohm), it was good for all parties involved.

Boo! This is a terribly rational post. Boo!

This is true. He does have success in lower level conferences. I see him racking up a lot of wins against the likes of Rutgers, Illinois, Nebraska, Penn State to make his recod look good and get to some tournaments. Heck, even Fran got to an NCAA tournament in that conference.

I agree with this. However, that doesn't mean one of the top 5 college programs, financially, should hire you. If this is Minnesota, I'm not scratching my head. For what Ohio State could of pulled in, this is a horrible hire.

I wouldn't say there were any missteps. He had three future NBA players at one point on his roster and couldn't even finish over .500. Brackins, Garrett, Hamilton combined with Staiger (who was a pretty decent college player), and Vanderbeken but he still couldn't even get a bid to the big dance? There are no missteps, he just couldn't put anything decent together with quite a bit of talent. Maybe he's become a coach ready to take over a P5 school again (remember it's a lot easier to get big name guys at Ohio State versus Iowa State, even though McDermott was a fairly solid recruiter at ISU), it's just iffy because Creighton isn't a power school, so it's hard to see if he can handle the transition.

I must say I am very shocked that Ohio State couldn't find a bigger or better name than this guy.

I'm not as down on McDermott as some of you, but I'd give this a C+. I definitely expected better with their ability to pay a new coach.

That's where I am. Firing the winningest coach in school history to hire a 52 year old guy who's never been past 2nd round and already flamed out at one high major has me scratching my head if I'm a buckeye fan.

They did hire That Matta from Xavier, which is similar to Creighton. I think a lot of ISU fans are underselling McDermott because he sucked so bad here, which is understandable. He has never done anything in the tournament though, that would be my biggest worry.

Look for McD to pull what I like to call "The Full Chizik" and take the Buckeyes to an NC.

Five years. Five years with a losing record and not even a whiff of the NIT to our name. As a person, I liked McDermott. I never understood why he wasn't able to succeed here.

But if he takes Aaron Craft's alma mater to the NC, I may start kicking kittens.

Most coaches don't have a great tournament record.

He has changed how he coaches since leaving ISU. One thing a good coach does is adapt when he fails. He did that and I think he is ready for the job. Also a lot easier to get talent at OSU
The Creighton last year was outstanding before their point guard's leg blew out...they were top 10...and would have made noise in the tourney without that injury. He has changed in that he pursues the transfers hard while having a core of 4 year players. He certainly would not be the worst BIG coach...

This does have the feel of a major nut kick in the making. McD isn't inheriting a whole lot, so he'd better hope they give him time to get the program back on track.
