It was more like 87-88-89 that we were there with any frequency.I would say it started around 82-83
Dugan's was great in the 70's when you couldn't sell beer on a Sunday unless you made a certain percentage of your sales from food. They always had a Sunday night crowd. A lot of students rented houses in the Campus & Hyland avenue area.It was more like 87-88-89 that we were there with any frequency.
I have a horrible memory of that place anyway. After ex & I split up, older son got a concussion playing tackle football sans helmets with some buddies in a vacant lot. The hospital decided to admit him for overnight observation. Finally tracked down the soon-to-be ex at Dugans (this was before cell phones). He was at some politically oriented "meeting" there according to a mutual friend. There was a cover charge that night because of the speakers, and I didn't have the spare cash. I finally convinced the ticket taker to just let me go in and tell him that his son was in the hospital...got inside and found him sucking face with a colleague of mine. Told him about our son, did an about face & walked out.
He never showed up to the hospital.
I've never been back to Dugan's, over 25 years now.
That's a pretty sh*tty memory. What an @ss.I have a horrible memory of that place anyway. Maybe she was posing and trying to get your attention. We were at Beloit College taking some hung up limbs out of a tree. About 50 feet down the sidewalk, where it began, a girl stood there for about 30 seconds deciding whether to walk down the sidewalk or cross the street and use the one on the other side. How does it take someone that long to decide if that's a good idea or not??
Maybe she was posing and trying to get your attention.
She was checking out your backside. No, I had my back to her. Boss's son was facing the other way because he was blocking the sidewalk from the other side, so he saw her do this.
That one was. I was a very different person at 20 something than I was in my late 30s...finally grew into the knowledge that I was stronger than I thought I was and that I didn't require a man "taking care of me"....but that's what I was taught from childhood. Matter of fact, when I finally got up the nerve to tell Daddy I was getting a divorce, he said "you're a fool...you're giving up your meal ticket".Men are pigs.
My memories of Dugan's are mostly food. The early 80s, I never noticed it being a gay hangout but it was politically liberal. On St. Pat's day, some random guy pulled a presidential move, tapped me on the shoulder, and introduced himself by kissing me on the mouth. Against my better judgment, I just pushed him away instead of kneeing him in the groin.
I did go in there for a sandwich and a beer one afternoon when I was studying for a test in philosophy course that I had skipped for about two weeks. Met a nice philosophy prof who saw what I was reading and gave me the nuts and bolts I needed for the midterm.
She was checking out your backside.
The boss's son was just trying to not let you know what was going on. If there's one thing to know about business, it is to never completely trust the boss's son.Well I never did see her so I don't know what I missed.

Probably blames me for getting sick. The boss's son was just trying to not let you know what was going on. If there's one thing to know about business, it is to never completely trust the boss's son.

In the ghetto today. There was just a shooting across the street from the store I'm at last night. And I'm a white dude wearing a cashmere sweater. Wish me luck.
