Big Man Recruiting - Prohm's luck will change

The nancys on this board seem to think getting a skilled big is like going to the grocery store and grabbing one off the shelf - especially because Fred left nothing in that category then bolted very late in the recruiting cycle to allow CDP to actually FIND a guy still left on the shelf to recruit.

But we lost a game on the road yesterday to a coach with a BIG time resume so CSP sucks...

when you look at other programs and what they have for bigs, yes, yes it is like going to the grocery store and grabbing one off the shelf. In the context of college basketball, there are plenty of them that are better than anything we have. Just watch games over the weekend, every school has them, especially P5. We are woefully short in this area compared to most schools. Granted, we have better guards than most schools. It ticks me off when I see programs that don't have a basketball culture and play in front of 4,000 fans and they have 2 or 3 bigs that I would love to have. Heck, did you see Northwestern vs Iowa? Each school had at least 2 guys off of each roster I would to have. Nebraska who has never won an NCAA tournament game has better bigs than us.

Then Nebraska makes the most sense. But we're Iowa State?

Read what you just typed and tell me that's not just dumb as ****.

This is the problem with a lot of the, I'll be nice here, "throwback" posters that want to be the 1987 hoks. They'd rather have a big guy that gets 10 rebounds a game and fouls out of 40% of games than win tournament games.

Well, I think we'd settle for a post who is playable at this point. Prohms post recruits are averaging about 0 and 0 now days.

Somewhere between 0 and 20 would be nice.

Bowie has been about what someone could reasonably expect out of a him at 8&5 and our second best or best rebounder depending on how you want to look at it and he's getting better.

But nothing's going to stop you from whining about this for the rest of the season so we probably shouldn't even bother.

Yes Bowie is a good player for us. The only problem is he's playing out of position, which isn't his fault.

He's a wing, pretending to be a post.

Bowie is more of a 3 than a 4 but I agree Bowie is producing admirably being forced to play the post.

Two questions:

1. Has Prohm given up on Holden? I don't think so. I'm intrigued by the way he positions him on the bench for the games. Holden is near Young and closest to the scorer's table. I wonder if he is trying to motivate him. Holden doesn't seem checked out during games. He is still cheering a lot for the team.

2. Can Bowie dunk? He likes to take it to the basket, but I don't recall seeing him dunk. It would help a great deal if he could finish more strongly around the basket. Or maybe he just doesn't have the hops (which would help explain the rebounding problems).

What rebounding problems?

There are three ISU pay sites? Why do you need that when there is CF!
All cyclones suck. Cyclone report sucks. But Cyclone Alert has best recruiting info and inside scoop of any site, free or pay.

Easy to see guys that have developed into serviceable bigs and think that. Reality is that bigs are much less predictable in development. It would be great if you knew at recruiting time that these guys would turn out, but you don't. If you think you're going to grab a big that's in the 150-200 range and assume he'll be serviceable, good luck. Be prepared to spend 2-3 schollies and lots of coaching resources to develop a decent big or two every couple of years. If you're not a blue blood you can take that approach or do what Prohm is doing- land highly rated classes full of guards, target a highly rated big like Stokes and Lard that have a good chance at being good, and if you strike out fill with transfers, JUCOs and maybe the occasional low rated big turns out.

Well there you go, although I'm not sure it will matter to Spokane, he seems pretty dug in on this one.

I could link numerous articles (but I won't) with recruits saying the same thing. He wasn't offered, he doesn't play for ISU, I don't consider this a failure by CSP. 20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing - but too many on this board don't extend that vision to Fred's time here.

I just wish one of these "bigs" could actually protect the rim and maybe rebound? Is that too much to ask? Who gives a flying .... where Holden sits - he is sitting! Playing would indicate he had potential- just stop!

Everyone needs to relax on the staff and the big recruitment. Prohm system stresses guard play and though he would happily take a mobile top 100 big they aren't the most important position to get. He has gotten 4 true bigs in the two classes Carter, Ernst year 1 and Young Lard year 2. Bigs take a while to develop no matter where they are ranked coming out (Look at KU with Alexander and Bragg) and often don't really impact until their Junior years.

Losing Malou and not getting Lard when Prohm was counting on both to contribute isn't their fault either. They may have missed on Holden, but it wasn't like there was a large amounts of Bigs to choose from as Grad transfers last spring/summer wanting to come either.

Let's see how Lard, Young and Carter (plus there will be more added with 3 scholarships open) develop next year before we start killing the staff. Even with the "issue" ISU is a likely tourney team and fighting for a top 4 seed in the Big 12 tourney.

It's kind of funny that is exactly what Jameel did and everyone hated him. This is why it's so frustrating. We'll get a couple good bigs soon and then everyone will be getting a ride in the back of the "if only we had better guards" whambulance.

This makes no sense considering we have zero productivity from F/C this year. It wouldn't take much for us to get more from that position.

Ernst has gone on to receive offers from Xavier, Pitt and several other programs. Normally we would be jumping for joy landing a post with those offers.

If Carter transfers he will likely end up a a low major program. Kasongo basically had no other options.

That's inaccurate. Chose us over Illinois, TCU, USC, Seton Hall, Cal and Washington
