These statements are at odds with one another. First, you say you do not know more than the coaches. Then you say the coaches are, in fact, wrong and you are correct because no doubt they would agree with your point of view if only we could ask them.

Really. . . .

I'll bet you that the coaches knew we needed TDs to win. Also, I'll bet you they looked at down and distance, tendencies, matchups and percentages when deciding to get the points that were available to them when they were available to them. Halftime, 21-16, a five point iSu deficit, so the 12 points that came from Cole's foot in the first half kept us within striking distance for a good bit of time.

As we did from a similar position near the goalline against Kansas State? Those two Lanning runs that failed to gain the end zone? That didn't work out well, did it?

It might be that WVU and KSU own the best two defenses in the Big 12. Maybe the coaches had their reasons for using a different tactic this time around, and who are you to claim that tactic was the wrong one? If you're something more than just a fan sitting in the seats, maybe you do. What would you have said, though, if Lanning was used but failed to bang it in as he failed against KSU?

You're right! I just realized my opinion was wrong. Thank you for your persistence.

Regards.

I apologize to you for my aggressiveness. I try hard not to personalize my comments. I have a thing about non-football people who claim they can do a better job than those who have spent most of their lives playing, learning about, thinking about the game. It rankles.

However, I am defenseless against those everyday fans who say they could have made better decisions than those made by CPR in several cases last fall. I stand (well, at the keyboard, I sit) mute. Got nothin' to say about that.

Remove the first three games (UNI, Iowa, TCU) and the season wasn't as despondent feeling as the past three. Yes, even yesterday's 30 point beat down didn't seem that bad, maybe because there were several points in the game where we could have seized momentum, but just did Iowa State things to hold us back

-Not sure what happened to Mike Warren, you normally dont go from a freshman all-american to barely playing. Campbell needs to get that figured out whether it was an injury or he was in the dog house.

Why, we got good production this year without the fumbles.

I give it a C. I was expecting a 3-4 win season.

1st month and those losses to UNI and Iowa were just soul sucking. Close loses to Baylor and Oklahoma state were heart breaking. Hung close with Oklahoma. Beat TT, SJSU, and Kansas. Good wins, but needed more.

Nice recruiting class coming in next year. They will be the future and success of this program and university. It will be based upon how hard they work every day of the year (yes offseason). This class will need to hit the gym everyday and consume all the whey protein to get big gains and speed.

Hopefully Lazard stays. Park and Lanning return. Here is hoping we play with more swagger and come out on top of close games! Had we beat Baylor and OSU this would of been an A season even with Iowa loss. We were that close! We see how unstoppable we are when firing on all cylinders.

I went with C (C+). Coming out and losing to UNI and getting blasted by Iowa was disappointing. However the team got better each week and you could see the coaching of the kids improve. I think we found the QB for the next two years. Park having an offseason to improve and the young talent around him should equate to an exciting offense next season.

The defense seemed to do pretty well (minus WVU) for big 12 standards. As this staff gets more of their system into place and continue to bring in more talent the expectations will continue to rise.

C- for me. The first quarter of the season, we looked awful. But it was nice to improve through a season for once.

Pros:
1. Nice improvement through the year.
2. Offense was pretty damn impressive at the end of the year.
3. Outside of a couple of games, we didn't get blasted by 40+ like we typically do. Even in most of our losses, we had chances.

Cons:
1. UNI was a .500 FBS team and we lost. Iowa game was a laugher.
2. Not holding double digit 4th quarter leads against Baylor/OSU.
3. Run defense was brutally bad most of the season.

B.

The coaching staff deserves a B based on these achieved objectives.

1. How have they recruited? (Exceeded my expectations by a long long ways)
2. Did the team improve? (Without question this team improved as the season progressed and the process is working)
3. Only two teams in the Big 12 didn't give up 50 Pts in a game - Oklahoma and ISU.
4. Team as a whole looked much much better in preparation then last year. Rarely were we out of time outs in the first quarter this year because our offense couldn't get a play in...

Now things i hope this staff can improve on going into 2017:

1. Improve run defense - without question our defenses achilles heal was the ability to stop the run when we needed too. I believe there is a philosophy change occurring as CMC has recruited much larger DT's to eat up space and blockers in the middle. Allows LB to run more and controls the middle of the field.
2. Linebacker - our linebacker position needs to be more athletic.
3. Continued Development of Offensive Line. I believe that Manning really got dealt a bad deck of cards and carved out a decent - not great, but decent Oline. Getting an All Big 12 LT always helps.
4. QB play. I enjoyed watching the continued development of our qb's. I thought Park advanced a lot and it was fun watching a qb that actually looked at his first receiver and didn't throw it. First time in a lot of years that a qb could visible be seen going through his progressions. It was great to see!!!!

2017 will be a bowl year in my opinion.

I'd go with a C-.

On the positive end, I do think we saw some development at all positions. I'm thrilled with what we were able to do with this line, given what we had there. The Tech game was as much fun as I've had watching Iowa State football in years. Offensively, I think we are establishing an identity and we have the tools to be dangerous next year. Also, while not directly related to this year's team, the recruiting has been a great plus.

On the negative end, the first few weeks of the season were atrocious. The close calls in the middle were encouraging in one regard, but frustrating in the next. Those are games we have to learn to win. The WVU drubbing was disappointing as well.

So in a year where we get drubbed by UNI and Iowa and only scratch out 2 wins in a relatively weak Big 12, it's hard to find too much success. But there are signs of growth. That leads me to a C-.

I gotta go with a D, because in the end, that's what the season was. However, I'm more optimistic about next year than was about this season a year ago.

There were some positives, for sure, and going from looking like you've never played football before to a below average team during the season is a good step forward. But still bad.

How can anyone rate this season higher than a D? C's get degrees, aka a passing grade, which is "acceptable." 3-9 is not acceptable. Yeah they were in some games they could have won, but they didn't. Until this team gets back to bowl games and winning the bowl games, every losing season is a fail

I gave it an F

I've said it for years and I'm sticking with it - conference wins is what 'm looking for. UNI, Iowa, fun and all but I really don't care.

We had 2 conference wins and that's just good enough to take 9th place out of 10. That's an F to me.

I did not read the thread but voted with the majority, i.e. performed as expected. The WVU game was a big disappointment and tough way to end the season. I thought ISU would be competitive in that one. But overall, ISU was in a coaching transition and played tough most of the season.

I'll be very surprised if he applies for the draft. As good as he is, he has some things he can still improve on. I think one of the tv guys even mentioned it on Saturday...something about his breakaway speed or lack thereof.
But there's a small window to earn an NFL paycheck, and I wouldn't blame him a bit if he decided to get while the getting is good.

Considering that thread was made prior to important transfers (Jordan Harris, etc.), departures (Daniel Burton), and injuries (Jake Campos), it's pretty unfair to treat that as what everyone expected from this season.
Disagree somewhat. The transfers and departures were to a great degree on the coaching staff. They recruited to the point of needing 20 guys to leave. They were cleaning house. Might be the right thing for the future, but certainly doesn't take them off the hook when discussing this year's results. And if you're talking about departures, this thread was also before Bobek came along, who was one of our best players.

And as for Campos, guys are going to get hurt. We were incredibly fortunate this year on the injury front.

I went with a C. Some things were much better than I expected (O-line, offense in general), and some were much worse (LB, defense in general). They were MUCH worse starting the year, learning the new systems, than I expected. But they also were much better at the end.

I honestly thought they would be 5-7 this year, pre-UNI game. So that was a disappointment, but they had their chances (esp Baylor, OSU, KSU).

Realistically: What were you expecting? 12-0? I don't see how anyone with any realistic expectations for this team, 3-4 wins, can give an F grade. Yeah, there were a few bad games, but the growth throughout the season, the competitiveness with teams we haven't competed with in years and actually having a competent offense with a patchwork line were all encouraging.

I went with a B - a couple different bounces of the ball and this team win 6-7 games. I just expected this team to compete and they did that better than I anticipated.

Realistically: What were you expecting? .
I was expecting about 3 wins at the most. But I'm not grading based on what I expected. I'm grading on what happened in the W column for conference play. And to me, 2 wins is worth an F.

If we go by my expectations of 3 total wins and we got that, I have a hard time saying, YAY! Here's your A!

B. We looked like a complete dumpster fire to start the year and improved week by week. We don't have the guys to compete with the top teams in conference but with the guys we have coming in and a little improvement maybe we'll have a chance for 6 wins next year.
I agree with this, if we played Iowa and UNI with the team at the end of the year, I sense a much better outcome.....
