ok, kickball finally.
So I practiced catching in the backyard and then we had a few minutes before the game so we did some practice catches and kicks. I had a nice catch. Too bad I didn't replicate during the game, womp womp. The other team was late cause some members were playing volleyball. We probably could have forced a forfeit on them.
Anyway, we started off decent, think we were up like 4-3 at the end of the 4th or so? Then one ball got over my head and they got a run, I felt bad. 6th inning though, bases loaded, 2 outs, they had a guy totally bomb the ball. Like, almost to the fence. ****. ****. Way over our players, and then they tried to kick it back toward the field and that went poorly. I was behind first base and first base girl and I kinda looked at each other and shrugged as people went running through the bases cause we couldn't do crap about it.
I kicked three times, on base once. Got all the way to third that time before the last out happened and I couldn't score, boo.
Think we lost like 13-4. Yeah. So it came out afterward that our pitcher couldn't move. Like, I had wondered about some of the infield balls that he made no move toward. Like dude, wtf. Well, he was in an accident earlier in the summer and messed up his MCL, I believe? It was a DUI deal so no sympathy here. But the problem is that means he can pitch but nothing else. The captain said he didn't tell us cause he didn't want the other team to know. Dude, you can ******* tell us on the sideline without the team 50yds away hearing that! It would have been really good to know that the pitcher was immobile so we could have ******* covered for him!
Cause we definitely had several in field runs because he made no move toward getting the catch and people were too far back to cover.
Sigh. And then I'm thinking, we honest to God have 17 people signed up for a 10 person league! And the captain keeps being like yeah, we need more guys! We had 3 people sitting each inning last night (2 guys, 1 girl) and that's with one regular couple on vacation this week and another two girls unable to make it. WE DON'T NEED MORE PEOPLE! But in light of this abundance, if our pitcher is now a liability, WHY AREN'T WE REPLACING HIM WITH SOMEONE ELSE?!
I think the final score was 13-4, so ouch. They want to do a practice next week which is fine, we need work on our kicking but yeah, if the captain is getting serious about being better.........there's an obvious starting place, imo. Like whatever, it's rec league so I'm not going to get super serious about it but they went on about strategy and included how I need to be better (that one ball over my head) so if we're going to do that, we need to address the glaring problems first mmmmkay? Like, they wanted me to play deeper and I had started playing up because I noticed hey, these ground balls are not getting stopped by the pitcher and girl on first needs help covering. She and I combined to end the 6th inning so take that!
Ok, kinda grumpy kickball update. God, I was just like wtf when the captain said that about the pitcher. In like a "did you guys even know about that?" way
YOU DIDN'T TELL US SO NO, NOT REALLY.
