***Official Big 12 Expansion Thread '16***

For those arguing that academics mean something please remember in 2010 when we were scared to death that we would be a MAC or MWC member. ISU is one of three remaining schools in the B12 with good academic pedigree, and it is unlikely if the B12 were to fail, that we would be invited to the B1G, SEC, ACC or PAC12.

This is all about football revenue.

Yep. This is all about money and exposure for the schools involved. And that money and exposure comes from the product on the football field and the eyes that watch it. Any other factors are minor in comparison. You can see this factor hold true in every conference realignment move made since this thing started.

ESPN and FOX can go fly a kite. Screw them. I think they are just trying to get rid of the Big XII. How much did they both just pay for shitter Big X content. I mean is Rutgers better than any of the teams being considered, no. But hey they paid 1 Billion or so for great Tier 1 content like Iowa vs Nebraska.

ESPN's new deal with the B1G was for $2,640,000,000, not $1,000,000,000.

It's a common joke on these boards man, pretty sure you post enough to be familiar with it. Academics ar TTU, KSU, and OSU are all relatively weak. They are often cited as obstacles for UT, OU, or KU leaving because the B1G or Pac wouldn't touch those schools.

If conference academics could hurt or perception it would already be happening. The Big 12 is pretty clearly 4th out of the 5 leagues in this regard.

Please feel free to post some links to make your case, because experience to date doesn't back it. ATM went to a crappier academic conference for some TV dollars and didn't look back. The mighty B1G with all their bluster about academics and AAU requirements took Nebraska when it was clear they were losing AAU status and other options were on the table. Why? Better football, more TV money.

Our peer institutions are other labs grants, schools with strong ag and engineering programs, and our sports scheduling agreement doesn't change that. I would be shocked if half the members of the faculty could name all 9 of the other members of our league. I would guess the same for prospective students and their parents.

Let me know when US News or Princeton Review our whoever add athletic conference affiliation to their academic ratings. I won't hold my breath.
.

Because Missouri and Texas A&M (both AAU members) moved to the SEC, I'd argue the SEC and Big 12 are pretty much tied for 4th best Power 5 conference regarding academics, or worse - the Big 12 is already 5th. Diluting the Big 12 with sub par academic schools would put the conference solidly in 5th place, which isn't exactly something to brag about as a university president. Quite a few people already have the SEC ahead of the Big 12 for academics (see below). Adding schools with sub par academics will only make it worse.

This article, which is admittedly out of date but post Big 12 realignment/pre-Big East realignment (2012) had an interesting paragraph:
"As for the worst of the major BCS conferences, that honor belongs to Memphis, a school that isn't even ranked among the top national universities. (Boise State is ranked as the 62nd best regional school in the West, which probably makes it better than Memphis too.) If you don't even think it's fair to include the Big East as a major conference then West Virginia and Texas Tech are tied at 165 as the two worst academic schools in the top five conferences."
My point is, yes, money does drive this. However, academics are not an afterthought regarding realignment - especially when its presidents who make the final decision.

Also, regarding your statement about how many faculty know who the other nine conference members are... you do know that university presidents are members of the faculty, right? Excluding the University of Iowa, university presidents were all at one point in time a tenured faculty member, and remain members of the faculty through their administrative careers. Just because faculty spend 10+ years in college and have jobs with huge workloads does't mean they by and large are not sports fans. My experience with faculty is that the vast majority of them are huge sports fans, with many being season ticket holders.

I'd love to think that we are playing pony with the networks, but let's remember who's in charge and how well things have been run to date.

Lot of rumors/speculation here in KC today. Something about GoR being circumvented to get out of the P-12. Colorado, Colorado State, Arizona and Arizona State to the Big 12 talks.
I don't know how they would do that, but if it's true that would be awesome. Having said that, I'm not holding my breath.

Large "party tent" currently going up in the middle of CSU stadium construction zone...

Might not be related, but interesting spot to make an important announcement.

We are either headed for destruction or a enjoying week of reading LandThieves after the GoR is extended. LandThieves already hypothesizing a B1G pod with them, Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri.

There's no way this is happening, but it would be the greatest thing to happen to the Big12 in some time.

Back in April I heard Pollard say that the conference will likely use expansion as leverage with the networks, "but you have to be prepared to play your cards".

Whether this is what happens or not, I do expect to see the unexpected before this is all done.

What will probably happen is no GOR extension and no expansion and this conference implodes in 6 years, I just hope the Big Ten comes calling if not holy hell. So we have got to start winning in football like good bowl games. Colorado, CSU, Arizona, ASU would be sick, but no ******* wAy that happens.

If, BIG IF, this happens, I wonder what it would mean in regard to the PAC Network. Would it be invalidated, thereby freeing up more money for the network who is paying for PAC rights to apply it towards the Big 12? Obviously I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know how these things would play out.

Even with the rumors of the pac12 being shakey I don't think losing these three schools cause much disruption for that conference. They still have plenty of strong schools remaining and really, these aren't even in the top 5 programs in the PAC12.
