New commitment - Safety Jordan Ulmer

So some of the best players ISU has had were short?

I'll take all of them again and 10 more like them.

More exception than the rule. Vertically challenged players have the deck stacked against them. Size was a definite weakness. There is a reason why pro teams target certain dimensions with certain positions. Those guys were certainly decent players for Iowa State but they were not All Americans and they were not standout professionals.

I will take the size and ability of Allen Lazard any day over any of those guys. That is why I like the trend of us getting bigger DB's. Tough for a 5'7" DB to stop a 6'3" Doctson. Size does matter. As well as ability.

Exceptional players, yes. Iowa State has had to roll the dice when recruiting and got lucky a few times. It'd be nice if we didn't have to gamble though.

I'd rather have 10 Kam Chancellors.

Well considering the number of players that ISU has put in the League, having 3 examples that were "too short" is a pretty good sample size, no pun intended.

Troy Davis was also considered short, but was a 2 time Heisman finalist.

The reason Troy was not recruited and ended up at Iowa State was academics. No one thought he would qualify. Troy did have size limitations as well. But the biggest issue was academics.

I guess it's how you view it. Tough for a 6' 2" corner to stay close enough to a fast receiver to even have a chance at the jump ball.

In other words I would take speed over height any day. The average corner in the NFL in 2013 was 5' 11". You get too tall and they lose the ability to cover people.

Anyone would take a player with size and speed. That's even rare in the NFL when it comes to corners.

Exactly. Of course we all want 6'+ corners who have speed, but that is not easy to come by. I think that the issue is when corners are 5'6" or 5'7" instead of 5'10"/11".

Yeah, those guys were horrible.

I don't care if you're 6'4" or 5'4". If you can play ball, you can play ball.

the guys you bolded were studs but Reeves had to be the most underrated player of the entire CPR era. If he was 5'9 he would be in the NFL. That lists really only shows that ISU has to take chances on smaller but still very talented kids. None of those kids end up at ISU if they measure up better.

Ullmer has very good speed. And he is 6'3". One of the fastest guys at the Sound Body and Mind Camp.

Johnson was actually a pretty highly rated recruit and had offers from several P5 schools. He was one of the better players that Chizik was able to recruit.

No disagreement here. I played linebacker at 5'6" in high school, but I would have loved to have been about six inches taller.

Shot in the dark. Topher-Ewing was a bad @ss LB at Ankeny who was probably about that hieght, any chance I'm close?

Long strides are just as fast or faster in open field. They won't have the same acceleration as the smaller guys but if you're running zone or are good with your possitioning the height advantage is pretty huge.

Not me. I don't think he could play DL.

Does this hurt the chance of Keontae Jones becoming a Cyclone?
This is me guessing, but if anything I think this has to do with Jones and White both taking their time, and Ulmer being a good option. Staff would still take the other two, but got a good safety prospect in case both of those turn south.

I hope we never have to watch a Sam Richardson size d back. He was just awful.

4.65 in the forty is good speed for a taller kid (time I saw listed). I don't consider that corner speed, however. I'll take that at safety though.

Now that electronics are used to time players consistently were not seeing all the supposed 4.3 and 4.4 times.
