Random Thoughts VIII: The Ocho

Not yet, but I do have it in my queue. That is that horror movie from Iran in B&W? In all honesty, real life Iran would have probably been enough of a horror movie.

That's the one. Beautifully made. I wish America could do horror half as well as pretty much any other country out there.

Probably because horror movies in America are made with the sole purpose of generating as much money as possible. So in order to appeal to their target audience (teenagers and college kids), they keep rehashing the same slasher film concept over and over. The better American horror movies are usually independent rather than mainstream.

I also listened to a show on NPR once where they dissected why horror movies are so different among different countries (their focus was USA, Japan, and Nordic countries; but they did touch on a few more) and it was very informative. One interesting point was that victims in an American horror movie have usually been chosen randomly due to sexual connotations (lust, having sex, peeping, etc - basically, horny people always die), whereas in a Japanese/Asian horror movie, the victims are targeted specifically for a transgression to the entity/ghost/killer (less collateral damage).

So essentially, because of America's puritanical views on sex, it's considered the evil in horror movies.

Also, it doesn't help that I ******* hate slasher films, and that seems like it's all America ever makes.

Speaking of puritans, have you watched The Witch? That movie was full of dread and atmosphere. I liked it quite a bit.

Slasher films are also not my favorite, but there is room in the genre to create some decent ones here and there. I do enjoy the ones with a bit more action like High Tension or The Collection.

Haven't seen The Witch yet. That's the one that just came out not that long ago, right? I was torn because the previews reminded me an awful lot of The Village.

Not at all like The Village. Speaking of M. Night Shyamalan, his last movie (The Visit) was actually pretty good. I also enjoyed Devil, where he was the writer. Too bad he effed up his career so that his name being associated with movies actually keeps people away now.

But I digress, The Witch is actually the kind of slow moving horror movie where you just feel like all the characters are doomed and you can also feel their helplessness as they move towards their own demise. Don't expect scares-a-minute or many jump scares, just creepy all throughout.

I didn't hate The Village. The twist was just ridiculously predictable. In fact, if probably would have been a pretty good flick if he would have just kept with the story instead of trying his twist halfway through.

I'll have to give The Witch a try when it comes to Netflix.

Shyamalan was a victim of his own success. After The Sixth Sense and Signs, he just tried too hard to have a bunch of connecting clues to reveal a really convoluted twist ending on all his movies. Lady in the Water was such a bad movie, he's lucky to have been able to come back from that and still make movies.

I thought Unbreakable wasn't bad as a nice little take on a super hero movie for him.

I didn't hate Devil, but it wasn't overall very memorable to me. All I remember out of it is if toast falls butter side down, Satan is near you.

Also, my brown dress shoes have been misappropriated by a spider(s). When I went to pick up one of the shoes, I noticed that it is full of spider webs inside. I thought about vacuuming it out, but then got to thinking there might be spider eggs or something else in there. No, thanks. Straight into the garbage. I'll wear my other pair.

Why do people in horror movies always have to go back inside the house to get something before leaving. Just ******* go and leave everything behind. Maybe send movers later to get all your stuff. SMH

I watched this god awful movie yesterday. The Ouija Experience 2. One of the worst horror movies I've ever watched. And I've even watched the first Ouija Experience movie.

But one refreshing thing about it was one of the female characters stopped another one and said "no, we will not do what every stupid woman in every horror movie ever does." And they did a pretty good job following through with it. At least until the end, anyway. So I do give the film makers a little credit for that.

I have no idea what to wear for this trip.

Well unless it's a nudist colony I'd start with clothes. :)
Are you going as a senior guy and supervising the person giving the presentation? Can't ever go wrong with shirt and tie. Actually ignore my advice I usually just wing things and hope they work out.

Well you do live in Texas, it could be some kind of killer spider. On the plus side some homeless person will be happy when they find the shoes.

Bad move. Needed to set them on fire
