COLUMN: An apology to Paul Rhoads

For the record, CW never apologized for expecting more. He apologized for comparing the program and Rhoads to Baylor and Briles and holding up the Baylor program as one that had accomplished it doing it the right way. If you are going to disagree with what he did, please at least disagree with what he actually did.

Well-written, Chris.

CPR did a lot of good for our program. Obviously things didn't work out the way we wanted, but he was an important piece in moving the program forward after Chizek, and was the right man for the job at that time. He also represented us with class and was a high-character coach, which I appreciate.

I know winning is fun, but I want to do it the right way. I hope our coaches are always men/women of good character and do us proud. Obviously everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect, but we need people with good character to lead our programs. Hopefully JP keeps hiring the right type of people, and the winning comes to us.

Biles is dirty but he's also X10 a better head coach than CPR was. Briles just got greedy and wanted more.

I know people laugh at and make fun of JP for always mentioning character and values as the first thing when looking at coaching candidates (I caught myself getting a little tired of this too), but after the Baylor and Penn State deals I am really glad Jamie is doing things the way he does.

But isn't that really the point. He sacrificed those young women to gain a few extra wins for his team that would have been good anyway. ******baggery at its finest.

Absolutely agree. I'm not defending Briles, I'm defending Baylor. I still want Iowa St to be like Baylor, in terms of coming from the basement of the Big 12 to championship contender, obviously without the immoral cover-ups.

More or less, I was disagreeing with the poster that said a program like Baylor can't go from last to first in multiple sports, without cheating, or shady activity, along the way. To say Baylor can't, is also saying Iowa St can't, which isn't that what we all want?

He did hire Gene Chizik, who left here to ultimately pay Cam Newton over $100,000, which helped him win a national championship. My point is not to disparage Pollard. More just that you never know what people are capable of when put in situations until they are in that situation.

OMG I made a typo!!! You got me bro!

Bro, if you're going to say to someone, "omg you guys suck" maybe just check first to make sure you're not also making yourself look like an idiot at the same time.

Also instead of saying "you guys suck" you could articulate yourself a little more constructively.

So, what does the problem with Baylor culture mean for Scott Drew and the men's basketball? We already suspected that the women's program was corrupt.

Good article, CW.

One way I look at it, is if you are an employer, would you rather your potential employee has a letter of recommendation from Paul Rhoads or Art Briles?

A core mission for a University is to prepare people for their future. Now, as a D1 football coach, I think you need to be aiming at giving players a shot at the NFL. And that requires developing top players and getting wins. Coach Rhoads didn't do enough of that. But I think Coach Rhoads and the rest of the ISU athletic department have a good grasp of the University's core mission which doesn't always appear to be the case everywhere.

CW’s underlying message is fine: Maintain perspective.

That's my general assessment of it, anyway.

I don’t understand why an apology-column is necessary. Did CW write anything suggesting that Rhoads could emulate Baylor’s rise to prominence if he could just overlook a little sexual assault now & again?

I have thought about if I'd trade the rhoads era for the briles era. And it's hard to say, I don't know what it would feel like to win 10 games ;). I'm not sure if I could separate the wins from the program. I do know that if I were a Baylor fan today, I'd be waking up just sick. But I do know that I had a lot of fun watching rhoads teams--especially the first 4 years. I'm glad that I don't have to let those memories go because it turned out the guy leading them was a bad human. And you are right, Iowa state isn't perfect. they've given players second chances.

First, excellent letter, Chris. You seldom fail to impress me.

As for this comment as to what it might feel like to win 10 games...

I agree that I can't quite imagine what that would be like for Iowa State either. But, like I've often said, in some ways Iowa State football is more fun than those big time winning programs. If you have a program where you simply expect to win and anything less is a travesty, where's the upside? As an Iowa State fan, every single game has the possibility of being a win without (typically) any real expectation. In this way, every game is more exciting, the chance for us - usually the underdog - to do something amazing. How we compete becomes important to us in the absence of wins. But, boy, when we do win - then it's really special.

And it does make you proud that Iowa State runs its program in line with the "honor before victory" adage. Paul Rhoads did certainly uphold that principle. It appears that Baylor got a bit too hung up on winning. I'm proud to be an Iowa Stater today.

The entire letter, as well-intentioned as it is, is awful. It reads as if there are only two options:

1. Mediocre to bad coach with good character
2. Great coach with lousy character

Thank God we had the first one!!!! Right, Chris?

I don't look like an idiot bro. Making a typo is a lot different than being unable to properly comprehend written content.
