OT: Random facts that really surprised me

A couple more:

1. (sorry Cubs fans): The most recent World Series title for the Chicago Cubs came about 2 weeks after the first Ford Model T was produced. The last U.S. president born prior to that date, Lyndon Johnson, has been dead for 43 years.

2. At the speed of light, you could travel from New York City to Los Angeles and back about 38 times in one second. That’s roughly 43,000 round trips in one day. (*verification requested --- it’s my math, and I rarely trust my cosmic math). If I'm wrong, I promise to vanish into thin air (temporarily).

Your math is way wrong. 2,280 RT in a minute, 136,800 RT in an hour, 3,283,200 RT in a day.

*speed of light in vacuum* = 299,792,458 m/s^-1*.001 = 299,792.458 km/s^-1/

distance from nyc to la = 3,944 km * 2 = 7888 km round trip

number of trips to la and back to nyc in one second @ speed of light in vaccum = 38.006 (round trips/sec).

however, if we cared about the distance between nyc and la.... we must take into account the affect of water and air
on the light beam.

the density of the media the light is traveling through is important.

*index of refraction*
air = 1.003
water = 1.33

say we have a higher amount of water in the area the beam is traveling of 4%.

299,792.458 km/s^-1 (light in vaccuum) / ((96% (air) * 1.003 + (4% (water) * 1.33 )) = 295,070.8661 km/s^-1 (light in atmosphere) / 7888 (round trip nyc to la) = only 37.40 round trips/sec

I concur

I have absolutely no idea what you said.
