Wiltz doing track

No kidding. Who does he think he is competing in two D1 sports at the same time? What a bum!

He's not a bum. Very few people could do two d1 sports at the same time athletically or academically but 22.08 is not very good. That would barely place (top 8) at the 4A Iowa State High School Track meet this weekend.

And you both seem to think he's running track to win medals.

Both of us as well as the track coaches. If he wanted to do track to stay fast for football they wouldn't throw him into the big 12 conference meet. I ran track at ISU and we had football players who came to practice to work on speed but never ran meets. The track staff is putting him out there because that's their best option.

Agreed. If running track will help his speed on the gridiron, I don't care how many 200m finals he fails to make.

When I ran track I was frustrated by a kid who could outrun me in the 200 without even trying - and believe me, he didn't try at anything on the track. He only went out for track so that he could stay in shape for football season. To a kid who had to work so fricken hard to succeed at anything it just seemed such a waste of talent.

Well if he is their best option, wouldn't he be leaving them high and dry if he quit because "he should probably concentrate on football."

Yeah he would. I honesty have no problem with what Trever is doing. Huge props to him for doing 2 sports. My frustration lies more with the track staff that through their lack of recruiting and training he remains their best option to throw out there.

Fair enough. Your comment probably got unfairly linked to ChampCy's.

It's not like ISU is a destination for sprinters. We have been good with distance runners but when it comes to sprinters they all go to warm climate schools.

Speaking of track athletes and football players. IMO it looks like both Iowa State and Iowa missed on Jalen Rima from CRP. UNI is getting a burner with good size.

Agree. The current coaching staff is trying to build ISU into a balanced track program and aside from Oregon and Arkansas, there are no good balanced track programs. Almost every program that is successful focuses on two categories (distance, sprints, jumps, throws)

A sophomore in high school ran a 21.77 in the 200m and Iowa States best time is a 22.02. Our track coaches must be horrible recruiters.

Sorry I was .05 seconds off, my point still stands.

ISU is never going to be able to get elite sprinters. A better barometer are their distance kids. The staff is getting nationally elite HS kids and they're getting slower once they arrive at isu. In the last 3 years they've gotten two of the best Iowa HS milers ever and they're not even on the team anymore

Maybe a separate thread should be started in another forum, but why are they getting slower? Why are elite recruits not on the team? I don't follow track/CC closely, just curious to hear your thoughts.
