7)Hawks vs 2) 'Nova

He's a decent enough coach. You have to be to pull a team out of the **** fest iowa was in.

But....

He's a subpar recruiter, terrible motivator, and makes questionable in-game decisions.

Also terrible in post-game interviews and throwing his own players under the bus. But other than that, just like a Phil Jackson/Greg Poppovich.

He got them in back to back tourneys, that's pretty solid for that program. Not sure he'll be given time to get his younger son in uniform though the way these next couple years. Jok is going to be targeted hard as their main scoring option and after he leaves the backcourt looks to be incredibly bad. His son has been plummeting in the rankings and the others look terrible on paper.

CF posters have maintained for years that Iowa will be terrible next year - but each year someone seems to step up into that lead role. I don't like Fran or the Hawks, but somehow he seems to put together a team that is at least competitive - sans the late season collapses. I'd expect the same next year. But if Jok actually leaves I think they really will be hurting, but I don't see that happening.

I pretty much agree with this assessment. I certainly wouldn't have expected some of their achievements for this year given their returning players. If he can pull off a tournament next year, it would be impressive, though Jok is a good start to building a competitive team.

Jok isn't the matchup problem that Uthoff is. With 4 starters leaving, they have a lot of holes to fill. There are several role players that need to step it up. The Hawks brag about last years class, so it's time from them to show what they have. This years class isn't the best it seems.

Will happen, along with about half the current roster.

I loathe Iowa mbb as much as anyone, but their 8 thru 12 players off the bench have gotten a ton of minutes and are far better than ISU's deep bench

So I'm trusting Monte returns and our newcomers are contributors. Because we'll have the same guys next year sitting on the bench during games

If I were an Iowa fan my main concern would be what is the ceiling for the program under Fran. Is it getting blown out in round 2 of the NCAA Tournament? With his recruiting I just don't know that they'll ever make the second weekend at Iowa.

Losing 4 mentally weak starters may be a blessing. Next year might be rough with the young guys, but at least it'll hopefully be new.

Getting Iowa to two tournaments in his 5th and 6th season after the Lickliter years is not too shabby by Fran. I don't know why Iowa fans would expect better, honestly. They are always saying how hard it would be to recruit to Iowa State. Iowa is really no different (at best). Fran is an above average coach for doing what he has done at a program like Iowa.

Iowa does have the better pedigree if you look at their total book of work. They've just been lousy the last 20 years whereas we have trended other way.

Frans done okay, while we have been hitting it out of the park. We need to appreciate both of those facts.

Well, twenty years goes beyond the life span of current recruits, and that kind of matters.

ISU isn't a tough school to recruit to for basketball at all. 90% of our games are on ESPN networks and we have a top 5 home atmosphere in the sport. It's not like we play in a dead arena and have 50% of our games on a network nobody watches, outside the midwest the games on BTN are effectively not televised in terms of walking into a restaurant or bar and seeing the game on TV. Our success the past 5 years combined with the new basketball tv deal has taken our brand recognition to a new level outside the state.

Sorry that I bailed on this thread yesterday! I reset my phone and for the life of me, I couldn't find it back. Turns it it wasn't on the rivals page like I thought it was, or it moved on me.

Regardless...
Jok is weighing his options. The guy came from the Sudan, so even if he could go make some coin overseas, I can see him taking that chance and bailing.

In regards to Fran, if Dixon leaves Pitt (which is where Fran is from..ish) for TCU, and the Pitt job comes open, I think there is some possibility that Fran leaves. His son has one year left of high school here, so either this off season, or next, is when he'd leave, if he does.
The real question though, is if Fran leaves, do we lose a few of the recruits that we have coming in? I know it isn't a huge class, but Tyler Cook appears to be one of the best recruits we have had come our way in quite awhile. I'd hate to see him turn that around if Fran left.

And yes, next year will be tough, but I think it will be entertaining. We won't run any real "5" guy, and our starters will be what, 6'5" or bigger, unless that incoming freshman, Bohannon, plays right away. So, we'll have some length, I bet we press a lot, and I bet we run a lot, more like last year than this year. So, while I expect to not be playing in the big tournament next March, I believe we will make strides forward.

And if Fran leaves, hopefully we get someone relatively competent...

Jamie Dixon is a better coach than Fran and they are getting restless with him. Pitt would not want Fran.

If Jok leaves, Fran better consider taking another job, because Iowa will be awful without him.
