Hotel horror stories

Heartland Inn in Iowa City, IA - Window AC apparently dripped in room, wet carpet and mold on the wall. Window was broken and taped together. And pubes in the bathroom. We walked in, saw this stuff, walked out. They were still going to charge us because we didn't cancel 24 hours in advance. I had pictures on my phone (which I had shown to the clerk) and said I would be glad to post them on various news media Twitter and Facebook pages. We were allowed out free of charge.

Edit: It was actually Coralville, I think. Across from UI baseball complex.

My wife worked as a maid in college at the Heartland Inn. She found a placenta one day. Told the manager, cops were called, and she got a new job at a campus c-store. Never did hear what happened.

Why are fire alarms in hotels 100x louder than any other fire alarm? I was at a Holiday Inn in Austin Texas once and their alarm went off for a good 15 minutes and dozens of people were complaining that they were going to suffer permanent hearing loss from it. I really could not blame them as it was by far the loudest thing I've heard in my life. I can't really even compare anything else to it, it was so loud it made me dizzy.

My lord that's more disgusting than anything I could have made up.

We were staying at a hotel in Red Oak back in that blizzard is December of 2012. The fire alarm kept going off that night because of the blizzard. I went to been pretty drunk and I am not sure I have ever been woke up by something so loud and startling. I assume it is that loud so they are assured every one will wake up, no matter what condition they are in.

Good question. I went down 22 floors and all the way outside as I needed some sensory relief. Couldn't hear myself think.

There must be some legal history for it.

Avoiding death/injury law suits must outweigh loss of hearing lawsuits which I'm sure happen from that level of noise. It really doesn't make evacuating the building easier though, people can't compose themselves like normal or even walk like normal.

Tower Motel Dickeyville, Wi. We played softball in Kieler and stayed there after a binge at Gooch's Greenhouse. Place smelled like death. Wood floors even. Used my ball bag as a pillow and slept on the floor.

So when the power finally comes back on do the locals swoop in to play all those credits. That does seem like a giant problem but they have to have a plan for the power going out. Right?

If they had a plan, they didn't clue anyone in on it. I waited about 30 minutes for some announcement on how they would handle it, and nothing, so I took a picture of my machine number and left.

It really throws a wrench in the Scorsese "Casino" image I have where those places are run like absolute clockwork. I can't imagine Ace Rothstein standing for that crap.

Reserved a room at a "resort" in eastern Texas. Arrived late at night, turned on lights in kitchen area, saw a bug. Opened the cabinet under the sink, more bugs (now realizing they were roaches). Opened door where furnace and water heater were, saw gaps in wall where many roaches were scattering into and out of. Opened dishwasher to find it dirty and what appeared to be baby roaches. Meanwhile, wife was in bedroom, pulled back sheets, found hair and orange Cheetos dust. Bathroom had not been cleaned. Couldn't locate manager, got a room at a regular hotel, went back next morning. Manager said it is really hard to find good workers in that part of the state! We got out of paying. Never will return.

my first time flying, our plane got delayed and instead of getting to Montreal, they so kindly had us stay overnight in Detroit. No, not in one of the nice hotels attached to the airport. They put us in a taxi and drove us somewhere else in Detroit to a hotel whose name I can't remember. Friend and I get into the room and notice various stains everywhere (she was pretty sure one was blood since her own Ames apt had a stain from a stabbing to a prior occupant) and what appeared to be bullet holes.

wtf? The landlord just felt like leaving a bloodstain for aesthetics?

Nicky would have driven over to the head of the power company's house, dragged him out of bed and beaten the crap out of him. Then he would go back and rob the place because he knew the surveillance cameras weren't working.

Ha ha, no, me either!

From talking to people around the hotel, it sounds like this management group bought the resort from another company and tried to renovate and ran out of money before they ran out of repairs (probably why they're so aggressive about the time shares).

Someone also said it was a power surge and that they had passed on the expense of surge protectors and proper back up systems.

My only real bad one was in New Orleans. I don't remember the name of the hotel but we were on spring break so it was probably well below anything nice to being with. That being said when we got to the room the walls were covered with black mold, needless to say we got out of that place.

I once checked into a motel in rural southern Iowa. I was in college and on the road working on my internship. The hotel had like a dozen rooms, an old ma and pa joint. Dried up swimming pool, old building.

It was the style where it is one story and you enter all the rooms from the outside. I got my key, opened up my room - and walked into see a cat giving birth to a litter of kittens. So I changed rooms. The owners didn't seem surprised at all.

Hey man, that's your in-room entertainment! IT'S THE CIIIIIIIRCLE OF LIIIIIIIIIFE!

TCU was at this Hilton once, and some dude went off for 48 and 18 against them.

I used to travel an average of 210 nights on the road per year. In all my travels, I've had some doozies. Funny thing is, some of my worst cleanliness issues have come at some 4 & 5 star places. One of best experiences wss at a $20 a night self serve hotel in rural western SD.

In Bangor, ME I stayed at the Holiday Inn near the airport. When I went to go to my room I opened the door and found a flight attendant taking a shower. Her uniform with skirt was on the bed. I quickly closed the door and got a new room.

In Princeton, WV a colleague of my lost his room because the hotel was oversold. When he pressed the rather surly male attendant about it and pulled out his confirmation the attendant told him the he didn't care about his confirmation number and if he said one more thing he was going to come out from behind the desk and kick his *****. I went back and grabbed my coworker and we shared a room for the night. In the morning the manager comped our room for the night and my colleague got a voucher for two more free nights.

In Dry Ridge, KY I woke up to find the texture on my bathroom ceiling on the floor and the ceiling was soaked. Evidently the person a floor above slipped and hit their head and was unconscious and the tub overflowed. There were ambulances at the hotel moments after my call to the front desk.

Twice I have had my hand on my loaded hunting revolver while someone was trying to come into my room. Once it was at 2AM in Bennettsville, SC and I don't know the person's intent but I asked "Can I help you" and the person walked away.

The other time was in PA. I went to dinner at the hotel bar. I had a conversation with some regular looking dude. After dinner I didn't hang out. I just cashed out and headed for my room. I was on the 2nd floor so I hopped in the elevator. When the elevator got to my floor I jumped off and went to my room. I stuck in the key card and looked up. The dude from the bar was standing right there at a very uncomfortable distance well inside my comfort zone. I asked the guy "what's up?" The guy started saying how his buddy had this business and he would like some info on the chemicals I sold. I didn't respond, charged thought the door and slammed it behind me. I threw every lock on the door, grabbed my revolver and called the front desk. The attendant got the guy's license plate number and then the manager looked at the surveillance video. She said the guy left the bar shortly after I did, ran up the stairs, and was right behind me in the hallway. I don't know what the dude had in mind but I was very angry with myself. I wasn't aware of my surroundings. Now I am continually looking over my shoulder and around corners when I head to the hotel. I always throw every lock regardless of how long I am in the room and I always turn on every light.

The years I was traveling heavy I was more sick than I had ever been. I don't miss it very often.
