Hi selection made a lot of sense. The church felt the need to get a pope from one of their loyal and/or faster growing regions. The most popular candidates were from Spanish speaking Latin America, Brazil, or Asia. Latin America used to be one of the strongholds of Catholicism, but it has really started to lose ground with Evangelical, Baptist, Pentecostal, etc denominations becoming more and more popular in the region.

They ended up with an Argentinian which is a refreshing change from all the European popes and might also help them solidify their presence and keep members from going elsewhere. We'll see what impact he has in the next few years, but so far he seems charismatic and saying the right things. He's no JPII, but definitely not grouchy or overly traditional like Benedict XVI.
