OK, since no one bit on my question about geithner/gawker...soo, I'll try to summarize.
David Geithner, CFO of Conde Nast, allegedly arranged for a male pron star as an escort. (OK, so from here on out, it's all allegedly, right) Escort figures out who he is, and more importantly, who his brother is (Tim Geithner, former treasury secretary) and asks David to help hime out with this little tiff he had with a former landlord or something. David cancels the appointment, citing a sudden change in plans. Then, basically, the escort outs him. Gawker runs the story.
Then, gawker management talk about pulling the story, editorial staff uproars, article is pulled over their objections, editors resign. They've got this missive about editorial integrity, and the 'business side not overruling the editorial side'.
Now, typically, I'd be sympathetic to the editorial side, but holy crap, not here, the friggin' story never should have been run in the first place. First, a closeted gay person is being forcibly outed. Not cool, I don't care if Geithner is married with kids. You...don't...do...that. Second, the only reason he was outed was because the escort was trying to get a favor, and since he didn't get the favor, he blackmailed him. Third...the escort, thru all of this WANTS TO STAY UNIDENTIFIED...so it's cool to throw Geithner out there, but ohnononono, you're going to stay hidden behind the curtain?
I mean, I realize that Gawker is kind of a crap site, and like I said, I don't read it that often, but this geithner thing was linked on every one of their sister sites (well, at least the ones I read) before it was removed, but to me, the editors resigning is just crazyland...how the heck could anyone think that was something good to do?
