When the ex & I first moved to Ames, ISU gave us the equivalent of a month's salary for moving expenses as the "hiring bonus". Wasn't nearly enough to get professional movers, so we loaded up a UHaul truck and my car and schlepped everything here from the SF East Bay area (Albany, to be specific).

We stayed in a hotel the first night in Ames. The next morning, one of the faculty from the dept my ex was joining met us at our duplex with about 10 grad students and five large coolers of beer. They made short work of the unloading AND the beer. When everything was done, a couple of the students gathered up all the cans on the lawn, put them in a couple of large garbage bags and gave them to me, saying "Welcome to Ames - here's a housewarming gift for you!". They must have noticed my confusion and had to explain the "gift" to me. California didn't have bottle/can deposits, so I had no clue they were handing me two bags worth of "pocket change". :)

Well, if you really want to close the deal and lock these Wisconsinites as friends, you could also make a bunch of sloppy joes and then call them barbecue. I mean, a little piece of your soul will die, but how badly do you want to assimilate with the Wisconsin friends?
My mother-in-law from Wisconsin always referred to them as "hot beefs"

This may not be the right thing to bring up in the midst of this high-society crowd.

what if they aren't originally from WI? what do I make them then???!?!?

maybe I should do an experiment and find out what they call it.

Beer & Pizza are the perfect moving options. Bonus: you don't need plates, forks or cups; a couple of rolls of paper towels and some garbage bags complete the picture.
Beer and pizza are a generally accepted form of payment for almost anything. They're practically legal tender.

Cowgirl is preggo???? Congrats! Are you naming it DB?

I'm in pre-pregnancy stages, so it'll be at least 10 months. So far symptoms are mild and include wanting to sleep in and get ice cream.

I think we'll work on a better nickname than DB.

No, too early for you to be the one who starts arguments. If you start a poll, of course the people who call them sloppy joes will ridicule those who call them barbecue (for good reason), and then it'll be a thing, and everyone will talk for years about how 'remember the meowing girl? I totally thought she was gonna be cool, and then she brought the drama with starting the sloppy joe/barbecue argument RIGHT away....man, we dodged a bullet on that one...glad we found out up front"
