Do we even want a 2 seed? Won't we get stuck in Kentucky's bracket then like Wisconsin is?
Yes we will, we are Iowa State.

Plus how many times have we squandered that opportunity. Kansas is likely to lose again. May not but odds are they do. Yeah maybe outright is a pipe dream now but every team loses in this conferencE it is just too tough. As deflating as that loss to Baylor is, it probably won't move ISU down the S-curve much at all, considering recent results of teams in our vicinity.
Baylor was teetering along the 4-5 line. A win at ksu can add a counter-weight. Beat OU, and we're just as good as we were after the osu and Texas sweep.
Squandering a chance to make a late push for Big12 title is disappointing, but tourney resume didn't suffer based on that result.

The NCAA tournament is the priority #1.
Priority #2 is getting a nice seed.
(large gap)
Priority #3 was the Big 12 championship. It's still attainable, but now no room for error, and we need help to do it.
Joe Lunardi now has us as a 3 in Columbus. Which is Kentuckys region.
A nitpick on Lundardi update: ISU wouldn't be placed in 3-14 w/ Georgia State, because one bracketing principle is to avoid season rematches in round of 64. Easily fixable, switch GSU to Maryland's bracket, Iowa State faces South Dakota State instead.

Still on the 3 line. In UK's bracket, probably a worse draw for 2 seed (UW) than previously (Arizona), but path to Sweet 16 isn't too bad. (Oregon as an 11 is one of those "surging danger" teams).
Edit: ISU got shifted to Columbus for first weekend, that's a noticeable slip for sub-region placement. 3 OU got Louisville slot, 2 Wisconsin in Omaha.
You value getting a good seed over winning the Big 12 championship?
1) Winning the Big 12 championship will take care of the seed.
2) Big 12 championship is a greater achievement than a #2 or 3 seed or whatever.

Seed allows you to do well in tournament. The big 12 title does not. It works both ways. Care about winning games and a title takes care of itself tOo. What is the prize though. It is hard to move from one prize to the next. The tournament and seed are all part of a logic model to the end goal.. Big 12 isn't a must to that end. Hence it is gravy.

I'm not sure that's true. Oregon and UNLV played each other in the round of 64 two years ago after playing during the regular season. I think that only applies to teams you've played twice...
