Would You Give Sage A Chance?

Let's say that CPR doesn't work out.

We've all seen the success that our basketball golden boy has had coming from absolutely no coaching experience.

I just got done listening to the interview that CDubs did with Sage and it got me thinking. I know he doesn't have HC experience either, but he's a super loyal and passionate ISU guy as well as a guy who's full of knowledge and has had a ton of experience at all levels.

With that being said, would you be willing to take a chance on hiring someone like Sage who could possibly be our football golden boy here at ISU even though he doesn't have any HC experience?

No way - that Hoiberg thing isn't working out at all (just read the posts today).
 
While he is a Cyclone legend (maybe not on the same level as FH) and very loyal ISU guy. I would love to have him on the staff but I don't think he has the connections to the pro level like FH does. Football is a different animal and Sage certainly has potential but I'd really like to see him excel at a smaller school/smaller level as a HC before I would hire him to be a Big 12 head coach. But if he wants to be a positions, especially QB coach than hell yeah I would take him.
 
Being a head football coach is a bigger leap then basketball. Much more to manage.

Fred is exceptional. That doesn't come around often.
 
Maybe I'm in the minority but I'll say hell yes. If you are going to replace CPR you're not going to get a blockbuster hire. Bring in a guy who has proved he is charismatic via twitter and radio show appearances. Plus he has been a QB in the NFL which could bring in a somewhat high caliber recruit QB to lead an offense.
 
Would I give him a chance? Absolutely. Would he be my first pick out of whatever candidates would likely be interested in the job should it become available? Probably not.

Agree.

But I'm reminded of what Bob Dylan said, "When you got nothin', you got nothin' to lose. If the program is in a state where we have to fire PR we'll be pretty close to nothin'. I could roll the dice on Sage.

None of these have anything to do with coaching. Also bringing in a QB is always a gamble, unless you suddenly expect Sage to pull a 5 star out of his butt.

So youre putting all your eggs in "maybe he can get a good QB that in 2-3 years will be NFL level" basket, which in reality is like 4-5 schools a year MAYBE, with those schools usually being the traditional powers.

Did Dylan really say all that? I'm surprised he would have any knowledge of CPR at all.
 
It seems to me that in football the players are so isolated by position group at the college and pro level that it would be harder to understand what all a head coach does by simply playing and being around a program. Not so much with basketball as you have fewer players that all work together and work with all the coaches. You see players move into HC positions without any coaching experience in the NBA. I don't think I have ever heard of that happening in the NFL. Seems like a totally different animal with football. , and something that likely wouldn't turn out well.

If I was making the decision, no way. The Hoiberg comparison doesn't work IMO. Take away Fred's name and we hired an up-and-coming assistant GM from the NBA. While its certainly an out of the box hire, the only thing Fred was lacking was experience coaching games. He worked the business side, worked with players, scouting, etc. Sage has done none of that.

If Sage really has an interest in coaching, it should be pretty easy for him to get a QB coach job somewhere and work his way up. Look at Kingsbury, it can be done and done quickly.
 
I'd rather hire a good coach than a bad one with ties to the university.
