On defense, I would like to see Iowa State change from a passive, read style defense to a attack style defense. Thoughts?

I've always wondered about a switch to a 3-4 since ISU has so much trouble recruiting and keeping D linemen.

We need a DL that can put pressure on the opposing QB consistently, w/o that factor, blitzing just leaves our our DBs isolated on opposing receivers, and opportunities for the other QB to pick our D apart.

First smart suggestion yet…. Totally agree….extremely hard to get quality Dline plus Wallys specialty and i think his greatest asset to College Football in general has been his ability to coach linebackers…. I think this would be tailor made to the big twelve and their ability to spread the field. We have a better chance of creating unique blitz packages if everyone is standing and the Oline does not know who is coming who's dropping, delayed blitzes etc.

Kingcy - totally understand - but right now their carrying a loaded DL - that depth would be generated by having 1-2 more LB under schollie.

That will never happen in the Big 12 vs. most teams IMO, they ball gets out too fast. I like the idea of a 3-4, makes more sense. We need to bat down more balls at the LOS. And back 7 year ago, when we blitzed CB's based on timing and being unobstructed to the QB is when we had the most success.

Would be good to see our corners jam the receivers at the line. That's how to slow down teams like Baylor. Otherwise you're just asking for slants all the way down the field.

I really hope this is sarcasm... (5+3+5 = 13) now if we can get away with it, 2 extra players might really help us.

I'd say whatever you can get away with, but that'd just increase our likelyhood of getting flagged for interference- which is high enough already.

A 3-4 should be considered, but you need outstanding hybrid players like Clay Matthews and Cam Chancellor to pull it off. If you have a player that can easily play rush end as well as linebacker, or a strong safety who can also defend the run near the line of scrimmage, then you don't have to worry about substituting players to match changing schemes as much. It also helps to disguise your blitz packages and coverage.

Yeah, we don't have any Clay Matthews or Cam Chancellors.

Our defense was over simplified this year: took a lot out of it to help with the lack of exoerience and the players not picking it up. Should have more wrinkles and not as easy to pick apart this year.
