Not a fan of Lucca. I manage a restaurant delivery business so I've seen the kitchens of some of these places. My suggestions in this order: Cosi Cuchina, Tursi's Latin King, Barrata's or Centro.
If you like South American food, I recently tried the new place in the new Des Moines Social Club downton on locust called, MALO. The old lady and I had 4 top shelf margarita's, an appetizer, and 4 different tacos all for $73. Highly suggest the place as the service was great and the atmosphere was also pretty neat.
Lucca is an unfortunate naming choice on their part.
Centro>Latin King. Latin King was very unimpressive.
Cosi Cucina under the old or new management? I think ownership changed hands several months ago.Not a fan of Lucca. I manage a restaurant delivery business so I've seen the kitchens of some of these places. My suggestions in this order: Cosi Cuchina, Tursi's Latin King, Barrata's or Centro.

Is it on the second floor of the building?
I like them both but you're certainly one of the few that thinks Latin King was unimpressive. They've been named Des Moines Best Italian restaurant a couple times now by City View. City View knows there stuff when it comes to food around Des Moines, they have a food and wine magazine called, "Relish" that takes an inside look at quite a few places. It's all a matter of opinion though. Agree with you on Centro
Probably not the fancy setting you are looking for but Tumea's has never disappointed me for Italian fare
If there are any Des Moines history buffs on here, I would like to know more about the building Cosi is in. I have been told by some people that it's an old mob meeting spot from back in the day. Where leaders from all over the Midwest would meetup and that has a part to play in how the building is set up. Could be all hear say but I respect the people who I've heard it from so I figured I would ask.
if you ask enough people, every old building in DSM was a meeting place for the mob. Ive started to just ignore it. Wouldnt be suprised if someone said..."see that bestbuy over there....mob meeting place"
