All-Time Starting 5 on a budget

The main reason I think Pippen is the way to go is because of his defense. When you're talking about a lineup with Big O, MJ, Duncan and Wilt, you don't really need Durant's offense. Pippen was arguably the best defender of his generation, and he was still a pretty solid scorer, too. Not that you really NEED his defense when you've got the other four guys, either. But that defense would be insane.

Yeah, I could definitely get behind that reasoning. I am kind of wanting Shaq on the team instead of Hakeem, and going with Pippen would probably be the best way to do that. I guess then I'd have your team...

Johnson
Jordan
James
Malone
Kareem

Yes, I know that is more than $15, I will just go to the bank and get the extra $10. BOOM, winner.

John Stockton ($3)
MJ ($5)
Scottie Pippen (a steal at $1)
Dirk Nowitzki ($2)
Bill Russell ($4)

You've got two guys who don't need to score to be effective in Russell and Stockton, the GOAT with Jordan, a guy who can defend three positions with Scottie, and a floor spacing big with Dirk. And the D can be aggressive and take some chances knowing that they have maybe the best rim protector of all time backing them up.

No wrong answers, though. This is a fun way to kill a little time.

Totally. I'd be interested to see someone here do this with ISU. The Iowa one was a lot of fun and I'd put this together myself, but I'm not nearly familiar enough with ISU hoops pre-Fizer/Tinsley to set fair prices or even pick the right guys to choose from.

I could go back as far as the Jeff Grayer years, but I wouldn't know how to assess guys like Abdul-Aziz and Barry Stevens who came along before my time. I do know that it's kind of a moot point because it's as simple as making Fred Hoiberg the SG/coach for $5 and you're winning; doesn't matter who you put around him.

Let me player/coach?

Give me Bird, Duncan, and Russell with any $4 guard court combination. How you beat that trio I do not know. Plus egos would be the downfall of a lot of the combinations on that list.

With those three I wish Reggie Miller or Ray Allen where on the list at shooting guard for $1 or $2. Also, would like Gary Payton at point guard for his perimeter defense. Of the choices listed I would probably take Stockton and Wade as a combo and leave a dollar on the table.

I go back to the Floyd era, so my rankings are going to be a little more approximate, but here is the basics of what I came up with in my head and with a little help from the statistics:

(1)
---
Jamaal Tinsley $5
DeAndre Kane $4
Diante Garrett $3
Will Blalock $2
Mike Taylor $1

(2)/(3) choose two
---
Jeff Grayer $5
Barry Stevens $5
Gary Thompson $4
Fred Hoiberg $4
Jeff Hornacek $3
Dedric Willoughby $3
Chris Babb $2
Curtis Stinson $2
Tyrus McGee $1
Marquis Gilstrap $1

(4)
---
Marcus Fizer $5
Royce White $4
Melvin Ejim $3
Craig Brackins $2
Jackson Vroman $1

(5)
---
Zaid Abdul-Aziz $5
Victor Alexander $4
Kelvin Cato $3
Loren Meyer $2
Paul Shirley $1

Feel free to adjust. This was a first stab at it. We had a ton of big guards/small forwards with really good careers, but frankly more guards than SFs, so I thought to combine the category, given that is less and less of a distinction in modern basketball.

Taking this a step further... After you spend $15 on the first team, make a second team to play the first team. Since top picks went to the first team, you get an extra $1 or $2 to spend and make the second. Now we've got a game!

I didn't bother to open it.

Magic
Jordan
LeBron
Russell
Wilt

Am I under the cap?

Isiah Thomas
Michael Jordan
Kevin Durant
Tim Duncan
Shaq

Any team that has Jordan would win against whoever.

This sentiment always baffles me and usually gets stated several times in a thread like this. There is no argument from me that he is the greatest of all time. But to think he is so much better than any of the other all time greats that it wouldn't matter who is on his team or the other team is laughable. I can only imagine the hyperbole that would have resulted if Russell would have won 11 in a 13 years career in the modern media/advertisement age.

Hakeem is a complete steal, as I'd argue him as potentially the best Center of all time. Jordan is a must have. I would take Thomas at PG, but he would have chemistry issues with Jordan, so I'd have to go with Oscar or Stockton. I don't know about PF. KG is possibly the best defender in his prime. Barkley undersized but great rebounder and scorer. Duncan is all around the most skilled. Dirk is the best scorer, but lacks defense. Malone the best athlete, is the strongest, fastest, and rivals Dirk in scoring. SF you can't go wrong with any of them so I left it for last. Pick Stockton add LeBron and KG. Or pick Oscar add Bird and KG

Stockton ($2)
Jordan ($5)
James ($5)
Garnett ($1)
Olajuwon ($1)

or

Robertson ($4)
Jordan ($5)
Bird ($4)
Garnett ($1)
Olajuwon ($1)

or

Stockton ($2)
Jordan ($5)
Pippen ($1)
Malone ($5)
Olajuwon ($1)

If chemistry wasn't an issue, I'd easily swap Stockton for Isaiah Thomas. I almost feel I have too much money.
