Quarterback Situation

Not taking the OP seriously until others with sources inside the football program confirm it.

The change up at QB has occurred because our OL gets consistently blown up, or when we actually had a Big 12 talent level OL, they would false start 5 times a game and get our offense into a predictable passing down. Outside of ARob we haven't had an effective running game (again see OL) for years, which doesn't help our QB at all. Throw in a rookie OC, an injured OL last year and there is the result. Some of you think it starts with the QB. When I hear that, I know that person has never played football. It all starts with the OL. That, from an old QB. Easy to make comparisons to Seneca. He was not just good, he was a rare, special talent. Good grief, if he goes to K State level team, he would have won the Heisman.

To be clear, I'm not comparing to Seneca. I'm saying ISU hasn't had a decent D1 level QB since 2002. (here's to hoping someone doesn't throw out Bret Meyer's stats to prove some sort of point).

And I'm not laying it all on the QB. It absolutely starts with the OL and running game, and when ISU's QBs have had those things going (time to throw, etc.), they've been able to play decent, and do enough to win. Heck, Jared Barnett should ALWAYS be known and commended for what a warrior he was in that OSU game, and he was far from perfect. But I still haven't seen one that I would feel comfortable with consistently relying on in the closing moments of a game, or when the running game isn't effective.

Just seems a lot of teams have at least someone who can still get the ball moving down the field, is all.

For anyone who may care, I have heard from multiple people inside of the football program that the quarterback depth chart going into fall looks like:
1. Rohach
2. Lanning
3. Richardson

Rohach is pretty far ahead at this point, and will most likely wrap up the starting job within the first few weeks of fall camp.
This is not what I have heard

Team members I have spoke too like Sam over Grant, From a team chemistry standpoint, its too bad if he has fallen that far behind , I'm not sure I buy it though.

This may be the case. But with the people I've talked to and am friends with on the team, they have both stated that this is the order the coaches have put them in.

Is there really such a thing as a meaningful depth chart at this point in the season? All it would be for is mind games. The one I care about is the one a few days into actual practices.

Just the Player of the Year in central FLORIDA. Nope, he's not that good to begin with.

Based on his time at ISU, he hasn't been anything special, and I haven't seen anything suggesting he will be. Not saying he can't become good, but IMO it's looking like he will be no better than Jared Barnett.

Stats are better than Barnett's were in essentially every category but yards per rush. Not bad considering how bad his o-line was last season.

Sincerely would like to know what you have heard, Ketel. You seem to have good information when I've read your posts. For my part, I take the coaches at their word on where the QB's stand.

Talked with staff at CHOT and have a close friend who is a parent of a starting lineman. All said SR was really hurt last year and played his guts out. Players love that and have a lot of confidence in him. Truly the only guy who knows is Mangino, and he has tight lips. Those talking don't know. We have too many coaches who like to blow.

We have the tailgate tour starting this week. Surely somebody will ask Rhoads about the QB situation and let's hear what he says.

This is pretty much what I have heard. I frequently visit with the parent of a player (and by-the-way, I do not think team players generally know what coaches are thinking). However, when I last visited with him two weeks ago, he stated pretty confidently that SR came out of Spring practice as the No. 1 QB. This same person did say that Mangino has been very tight lipped, so really it is any one's guess.

Uh, Ketel, what does your last sentence mean?

It means they like to talk too damn much to the media. Get your head outta the gutter :)

I'm guessing he's referring to the head coach in this instance... Rhoads himself. From what I've heard he has a tendency to say too much. Sounds like some of the things he said publicly last year caused issues within the team, and made the offensive and defensive staffs very divided. Hence the reason he replaced one of them.

I realize Rhoads is an animated guy, and people love him for that.

Yes, it had nothing to do with the product on the field. :jimlad:

I think Grant is a good kid, but when more than one member of the WR/TE corps and line say that Sam should be the guy, I tend to side with them. Team chemistry is huge. Steele Jantz never had it and if he would have, he would have been a lot better in his career here.

Umm the defense didn't perform any better there my friend, and yes I understand the offense put the defense in bad positions but that excuse only gets you so far. Statistically the defense was near the worst in college football.

Rhoads threw the offense under the bus publicly multiple times. I'm guessing that's what the previous poster was talking about.

The offense, or the coordinator should have been thrown under the bus after the UNI game. Not only was the offensive game plan horrible, but the offensive players just looked lost out on the field for most of the game. There is no excuse for not having your team ready for the first game of the year. I am still mad that Mess got the chance to flounder a whole season away before he was let go.

Some of you will come back with the defense was not ready either, and I will agree, but Wally has shown he knows what he is doing. Most of the issues with UNI where a couple new starters getting out of position multiple times.

In all reality, it doesn't probably matter all that much who starts between Sam or Grant. I think they both probably give us an equal chance at winning.... which isn't that great IMO. I haven't seen enough from either of them to feel much confidence in either one at this point.

What I'm saying is, I think it's pretty evident that neither one is the next Sage Rosenfels or Seneca Wallace. They are what they are. Hopefully it's enough for Mangino to win with.

My biggest hope for the future of ISU football is that DLC ends up being the real deal. QB has just been a huge mess on this team at least since Rhoads has been here. Not enough talent, and the position has been handled and coached poorly too.
