***Official Spring Game Thread***

Not necessarily. Mangino wants to get it down to 2 QBs by the end of spring. It's not out of the question that MM wanted to give GR and JL the most snaps today, for that very purpose, to figure out who would be #2. Rohach admitted he had a slow start this spring, by his own admission. They have been tight lipped about QB rankings all spring.

from CPR: “I would say Grant was probably was the top (QB) performer of the day, but that doesn’t put him on top.”

If your scenario is true, then they didn't give Joel a fair shot. Sounded like Grant ran with the 1's while Lanning had to deal with the 2's and 3's

I thought Grant had definetly played the best QB but was also going against the twos. Also threw up those two ints later that were bad decisions. It was also tough as a lot of throws floated with the wind. Jake Campos played well at tackle early on, must have been some friends of his near us as they were loving him spread out with the WR's.

It's a race between Rohach and Lanning. Personally believe it was just coach talk when CPR was asked about SR, and where he fits into the mix and CPR explained how Sam might get most of the reps come Monday or Wednesday. Mangino wants someone who will play within "his" system. SR, even though it is one of his best attributes, bolts and improvises too often in the eyes of MM. Just a guess.

What i saw today were two qb's vying for the starting role and those two are GR and JL. GR may have had a couple bad throws but he also threw the ball 3x as much as the others and the wind was god awful. He had QB open for two easy TD's and the ball just sailed both times. 1st team O could have easily put up 4-5 td's but the lack of playmaking i.e. catching the ball from Q BUnd. and the terrible wind along with a very limited play book prevented that.

I'm surprised SR with his weight gain and where he was a year ago didn't get more snaps with the 1's but after watching him he clearly doesn't have the decisiveness that GR or JL does. SR made some nice runs but we need a QB that can make all the throws consistently and run only occasionally.

What I saw was Sam running with the 3's all day, which confused me until I thought about it more. I thought the QBs were all 3 going to rotate all day with each of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams, but that did not happen. I was waiting all day for Sam to run some time with the ones but never saw that ( I may have missed something because I was in the corner of the field). I find it hard to believe that Sam has been demoted to 3rd team since he is healthy for the first time since 2012, but you never know. In the end, I would be surprised if it isn't Sam and Rohach battling it out, but Lanning definitely has potential, just lacks PT, which the other guys have.

I actually agree he was the best performer even despite some AWFUL throws, 3 INT (2 INTs and one that was literally right at S.B. Richardson he dropped) and missed Bundrage who had space a couple times with too much zip on the pass. Get some air on the deep ones if there is no help over the top and at least give your WR a CHANCE to make a play.

That being said Grant throws the ball VERY well in the middle of the field about 10-30 yards out and is just fine on the bubble/shorter routes. He also seems to make faster and better decisions when passing than SR and throws a better looking ball. Was very impressed with his running as well which is usually the bigger strength in SR's favor. Just needs a little work on the deeper/sideline throws.

He also didn't have much time to throw, since he was running with the 3rd string all day. If Sam had the best spring so far, and MM had to figure out who was #2, then today would be the day to do it.

You could tell Mangenious was testing out Rohach in the 3rd. Had him throw a couple deep balls back to back. He overthrow on both occasions. I agree that Rohach is a much better short and mid range passer.

I think the staff is making a big mistake to not consider Sam into the fall. In saying that, Mangino is a brilliant coach and I'm sure he'll figure it out.

Lanning looked awful. I don't get the love by some? Is it because he is a local boy? I stick by my opinion that he will never take a meaningful qb snap while at ISU.

Okay, I'll say it.

If GR is the best qb we have this season, we're ****ed. The INT's were bad but the blatant misses on wide-open receivers was worse. It was windy. But that was not a good showing today.

He's got a ton of athletic ability and potential. He's just young at this point and needs to mature and continue to work on developing consistency and accuracy.

Here are my thoughts from today about the offense:

QB. Rohach definitely got the best opportunity to show what he could do by getting the most snaps with the #1 offense. I saw more confidence from him, but not a great performance. His first few passes were bad and he never seemed to get in sync with Bundrage who dropped a few when Rohach finally got them to him. Lanning was given a great opportunity to show what he could do, but the #2 O-line and blitzing LBs didn't help him. He throws hard, but still needs to work on timing and accuracy. Richardson got the least reps of the three which was a surprise, but perhaps that was just because his is a better known commodity. Hodge probably made the best throws of the day. I'm not going to take much from this scrimmage about who is #1, especially if they are still saying good things about Richardson and he is still being postive. However, I expect that there will be a #1 going into Fall practice, but based on performance in practices, not in this scrimmage.

RB. Wimberly looked good as usual. Standard also. #33 Tyler Brown and #85 Mitchell Harger got lots of reps and both looked good. On a few plays, #85 did a fantastic job of riding his blocker downfield before he made his move.

TE. Bibbs looks really tough. Boesen didn't do much. Quan West got in during the second half and broke loose for a nice TD in the corner. I like his size, but not his speed, perhaps due to his injuries, so TE may be a great place for him. Nice to have a TE with WR hands.

WR. Nice to see Jarvis West back and doing his thing. Montgomery played with the #2s and still seemed to be learning the offense and didn't get much thrown to him. However, he meets the eye test for what I want in a WR. Harris dropped an open long ball in stride, but I liked his move to get open.

OL. Jake Campos looked much better than the coaches have been saying, perhaps just because they kept the playbook simple. He looked like he is just loaded with potential. The o-line seemed to do their job by controlling the d-line, but I don't want to draw too many conclusions from that.

When SR played with the #3s, I wondered the same thing. I would put much more stock in who gets the snaps with the #1s in the next practice more than who got them during this scrimmage.

Last weekend I watched the current punter Holden. I thought he looked decent, but we have a scholarship punter coming in and I'd assume it will be his job to lose.

I agree about the defensive backs they all look just as good as what we had last year.

Of course it will come down to getting pressure on the QB.

Qb's were inconsistent last weekend as well. I don't know if they are all puckered up so tight trying to win the competition or if they are just not that good. They all had flashes of being decent only to peter out.

Defensive line looked good at times as did the linebackers. I was more worried about the linebackers from what I watched. Meeks is huge!

Now if we could just get Irving to make a STOP when he/if he comes back. If we had Coe I would feel better about the line, but the younger guys looked serviceable.

Montgomery needs to not pout as much and work harder and maybe he would get a shot with the ones. He didn't look very pleased last weekend from what I could see and it showed. I hope he fights through it as he has the body to be special.
