Spring Game

Which is one of the reasons we will never have a "major" football program until people care enough. All my friends who went to SEC/large southern schools watch their team's Spring Game online/TV or go to them. We don't even show up despite people claiming to be "football deprived" in April...Want our Spring Game to eventually be picked up by Cyclones TV or someone else? Grab a friend/family member and go to the game.

16,000 & 15,000 for Iowa and Iowa State is pretty pathetic for teams who get really good support for most of the Fall.

It's gonna be in the 60s with little to no chance of rain. If you are an Iowa State fan and don't have anything earth shatteringly more important I would say get your butt to Ames.

I would agree, pathetic crowd we get for spring game for those who follow in the fall

They shouldn't have it the same weekend as Veishea. Too many other things on campus to do.

Couldn't disagree more. Attendance was even worse when they had it opposite of VEISHEA. Ames isn't a huge metropolis so having the Spring Game when a bunch of alumni and other people come back to Ames to party and enjoy the festivities is a great idea. Holding the game on a weekend with less people in town = less chance of people going. THE SPRING GAME IS AT 2 PM!!! 2 O'Clock. I've been to plenty of VEISHEAs in the past and there isn't anything that great going on at 2PM.

There really isn't jack going on at 2PM, that is why they hold it then. There really is no excuse not to go other than just not liking football. It's not the most exciting game you'll ever see but expecting an ISU Gold vs Cardinal scrimmage to be the same as ISU against #2 OSU is moronic. The game is just something to fill the LONG void between last season ending and months of summer baseball until football comes back. And it shows these 18-22 year old kids that you care and support them and their decisions to come from all over and play for your team.

The VEISHEA schedule doesn't seem to have anything happening until 7-10PM on Sat. Night. I guarantee most people who are "experiencing" VEISHEA when the Spring Game is going on are probably eating food or drinking beer on or around Welch Ave area, because that can't be done before/after the game or at any other time...

If it isn't raining, I will be there.

Shouldn't unless the weather changes and we all know that doesn't happen.

Right now it's 60s and 10% chance during the day and 80% at night. Hopefully that holds up. I will admit it is harder to want to go sit in the rain for an exhibition (the real games you go to even if it is -10 at kickoff.) But if it is 60's with no rain, sounds like a great time to practice tailgating.

Have not missed a spring game maybe 2002. Don't think I'm going this year. Just can't get basketball off my brain. That and the football program (hey we just lost Devon Moore isn't that great?!) has me incredibly pessimistic. Just don't see CPR doing anything this year. I just can't get motivated for ISU football with almost a guarantee of no bowl game again in 14'.

Wrong. There's tons of stuff going on Saturday afternoon until 5. On central campus alone: Veishea Village, Veishea Main Street, kid's entertainment, departmental open houses (I'm volunteering at one, and will miss the game), exhibits, fund-raising booths, etc. Betcha there will be more people on Central Campus than at Jack Trice...

Never said I doubted that. Just that the stuff going on then isn't really what people travel to Ames for. They come for the music shows/stand up and that is all at night time (People decide whether they go or not based on who is scheduled to perform in the music or movie/stand up industry - not whether or not there is a fund-raising booth.) Majority of the stuff you mentioned could be done at other times or other days during VEISHEA and is mainly for Ames natives who already would do that no matter who is performing and like I said before some of it could be done at other times. I'll say it again: The school schedules the Spring Game at 2PM on a Saturday for certain reasons. (Mainly it is more likely to be attended and more people are in town than other weekends.) They certainly aren't putting it when Britney's sister, Champ Kind, or T.I. are performing.

Reading many of these comments makes me realize how much last year (and the lousy ending to the year before) really killed the buzz around the program. I have noticed many long time posters who seem to be loyal fans who are really down on the chances for a decent season. Given the attrition on the defense, I can certainly see why. Hopefully there will be a few surprise guys who step up.

We need to do something to juice up the spring game. It's become more like another practice lately and it seems like it used to be more of a competitive game that got the players more fired up. It has become pretty boring.

How about a goal post dunking contest?

Last year JG was pretty fired up if I remember correctly.

15 yard penalty

Sincerely, NFL.

P.S. - Stop celebrating. Seriously. Also, we will continue to not pay income taxes because we are somehow a "nonprofit." Thanks fans! Keep buying and watching, you know you have to no matter how many changes we make to the game you grew up loving.

Serve beer in the game. Next put it on TV. Cyclone TV is boring enough, the spring game would liven it up a bit. No one should be ragging on ISU fans for anything, ever! Esp for football. Fans have done by far more in that relationship for the entire history of the sport then the other way around. Its not even close. Id say its even safe to assume that even in the early 90s when no one was there our crowd ranking was probably better then the team ranking, and that is usually the case. Esp in the last 5 years. So... them going to the spring game is a dumb argument. I don't think there is anything scientific equating Spring Game attendance and upcoming wins for anyone's season.

Bleacher Report has us as the 43rd best football venue (I assure you this has nothing to do with the team). I believe our team rankings are typically south of that number so.

Serve beer in the game.

Agree. And how about all games? I know JP has thought about and discussed it in the past, I really want to see him pull the trigger on this one. It will help keep a good # of people in the stadium instead of running back out to their tailgate to slam a couple beers and get back to their seat 5 mins into the 3rd quarter. Not to mention the $ they would make selling 6-8 dollar bud lights.

I know I would pony up the money for a couple beers at halftime for the convenience of not having to walk all the way back out for a beer or two.

Next put it on TV. Cyclone TV is boring enough, the spring game would liven it up a bit.

The boring parts to me is the filler (the TV channel) where it is just rotating ads for 30 mins. I LOVE the game replays (although they need to switch it up more often on which ones they play.) I love watching ISU/Michigan bball or ISU/WVU football, but don't need to play them 4 times a day. There were 36 bball games and 28 basketball wins this year, we don't have to just play the same 4 games over and over.

Also play some of the highlight/hit tapes. Spring Game would be something nice to watch during a "dead" time for ISU sports.

IIRC, the Ohio State spring game was on TV last year or the year before, maybe only ESNPU. However, it was quite a different event. They had already made decisions about starters for every position. And they were coming off a year in which they hardly passed at all. The entire Spring game was just working on pass plays. It would be awesome to get to the place where we reload like that and don't have to do so much rebuilding each year.

When the players take it seriously I will. I mean come on it is the equivalent of that last required class on Friday afternoon of VEISHEA week for them. All they want to do is get it over with so they can get to drinking.

First and fore most we will never be a "Major" program. I live about 4 mins from JTS and I will maybe go. The spring game is boring as hell. I get to see practices whenever I choose to and its no different than the Spring game. Meh.

One word for you, TAILGATING.
