Marcus Lynam@Lynamup53 hrsThe entire Iowa State Band just walked by me in midtown. They chose to walk into Applebee's. At 9am. In NYC. Freakin Iowa folk. #GoHuskies

I expected nothing less. Awesome

Some girls we knew that went to the pinstripe bowl spent 2 days at hard rock cafe.

Made me think of this ha ha!

Something tells me those kids don't have a ton of choice in their itinerary today.

Usually not. Wouldn't be surprised if it was "Go find something, be back in an hour" type thing. Not a lot of time to find/try places.

Yea, that was my thinking. If it was like KC where you're there for multiple days and you've got lots of downtime, I'm sure more band people would be trying to find cool places near the arena. If they just arrived this morning and they've got an hour to shove food down their gullets before playing a pep rally or something, give those kids a break.

They also don't get a lot of money for food if they are getting any per diem. Something cheap and fast usually wins out.

applbees: for people who are too lazy to microwave their own frozen food.

LV and NYC are the food meccas of the US - you can get anything at any time and there are tons of cool breakfast options. Does not surprise me.

Leave my sister out of this!

I dont know about that, i always had money left over from the trips they sent us on. And i imagine for NYC the per diem is a bit larger.

But as to scheduling, yeah, the best day for actually seeing stuff is tomorrow after we win tonight.

I had a friend who ate dollar sandwiches from McDonalds every day so he could save the rest of his money for drinking.

If you have money left over after a trip, then you aren't having enough fun after hours. (Or you're afraid to get caught)

When we were in NYC, we went to a Ruby Tuesday. At least it was a pretty cool one in Times Square.

I remember they used to give us like $25/day no matter where we went (big difference one year in the women's tournament between Bowling Green, KY and Berkeley, CA in terms of COLA, to say the least, even if it was the same quantity of nominal bills).

I get $72/day for expenses in the NY/Chicago/LA/DC kinds of places for work travel now (all the GSA rates). I also have, you know, a real job and am no longer a college student scrounging for a $20. The difference in the way I can experience places now (despite being busy on work trips just as I was on band trips) is night and day.

Play #49, kids. You know you want to.

I'd always try to eat somewhat cheaply at the beginning (OKC and Texas trips were great for this because there was always great Mexican nearby) and then burn all my money at the nicest place we could find the last night of the trip.
