Some people are programmed to always be looking for the next gig, the move up. These people in the National Media are that way, but not everyone is.

There are local media people ALL OVER the place who could have left, but love it where they are. I may be wrong, but hasn't Murphy had the opportunity to move on to bigger places?

What I am trying to say is, the people on ESPN, National Radio Shows just cannot fathom how someone would like the job where they are. They think everyone is after the next payday. They don't get how money cannot be the motivator.

There are not many harder jobs in college sports than being a head coach at Iowa State and Fred's goal is to bring home a championship, and he isn't going anywhere until that happens.

Stop the NBA talk until the tournament is finished for us! Let's just have fun with this amazing season before everyone starts crying and thinking Fred is going.

When I was attending ISU Murphy had the opportunity to go to ESPN. He turned it down because he was convinced the quality of his family's life would not be better than what they already had.

I wonder what level of control or favorable front office Fred would need to really scratch that competitive itch. Would a franchise like Minnesota that's always going to struggle to get the pieces needed to contend actually going to be that attractive? What about a massive re-build job like Stevens has in Boston?

why would anyone want to coach at idaho state? i mean c'mon, clearly the bobcats are a major step up from illinois state.

This is their elitist East Coast dogma ... No one in their right mind would live in Hicksville, Iowa.

This is the price of success.

I love what Fred has done for us....and if he left I'd respect him as it's his life. Of course, even with my Cyclone tinted glasses off, I would say that the challenge to get to the final four/big 12 titles, etc is also appealing and the payoff (non-monetary) would be huge here.

Mostly depends on if he prefers being a god or merely a coach. If all he wants is to coach, by all means go to the NBA. But, not many people get to walk through life on water...I'd stay in Ames.

That's the thought I have had too. And I know Fred is smart...and respects JP and the opportunity he provided. Fred has respect from the t-wolves (and i've heard from other GMs)....but the NBA doesn't care about your story, they want to win. The reality is he COULD in 3-4 years be fired....that's just how the NBA is. We'd still love him...and would probably take him back, but it's likely the ISU bball trajectory would not be on the same upward slant he's set into motion.

My IDEAL situation would be he goes all Jim Boeheim on us...is just a fixture...a winning fixture (the "challenge" for him isn't NBA...but how to sustain success)...and then at some point he and our admin make the choice to become our athletic director.

Would anyone really be even a little surprised if he decided to leave as soon as this off season? He may stay for a long time but you shouldn't be surprised if he doesn't.

Obviously that's the dream. I think the slightly different career path to his current job is the only thing that makes Fred different than a young Coach K or Izzo. It's not like those guys aren't ultra-competitive and haven't had NBA offers. Because Fred spent a few years getting paid in the T-Wolves front office while he waited for McDermott to vacate the ISU job, it's guaranteed he wouldn't choose to build his legacy in the college ranks?

Yeah, leave a 7 figure paying gig in the town you and your wife's family all live in, the entire town loves you and you are having incredible success to go coach a bunch of egos for 2 years until you are fired because the ****** team that hired you has unrealistic expectations. Sounds like a great idea.

What's the point of these threads? I realize I'm adding to it, but about once a week a thread is started about how some media person says Fred is going to the NBA. Then the 'Fred is never leaving Ames' cadre chimes in, along with the 'Someday but not soon' group.

Can we just sticky a generic 'Media person X says Fred is going to the pros' thread and leave it at that?

If a really great situation opened up, I wouldn't be surprised. Like say, the Pacers decided to get rid of Voegel, but were keeping that core intact, I could see that being attractive to Fred. But if he leaves for a rebuilding job or a historically non-contending franchise, yea, I'd be a little surprised at this point. He clearly hasn't peaked here yet, and I think he's the type that would let it bother him that he didn't "finish the job".

Agree.
I think Fred is going to be here for a long time. Let's remember Fred was the one contacting ISU trying to get the job. Not for one second do I believe he was interested in the ISU job only to use it to get to the NBA. If that was the case, he would have thrown his name out there for a lot of vacancies, but he didn't.
Since when has Fred ever been an ego guy? I'm not an NBA fan, but I can't even think of a single college coach who has successfully transitioned to the NBA - not Pitino or Calipari or Floyd and now Brad Stevens is in a horrible place. How many NBA coaches last more than 3 years besides Popovich, Phil Jackson and Pat Riley? Fred is a smart guy, I don't think he wants to move his wife and kids all over the country.
