Jeff Orr...Super fan?

Racial comment or no racial comment, this guy as an *******. I just cannot fathom any good reason to sit there and berate a 19 year old kid. To me, it is completely cowardly to sit there and say anything negative towards a player, feeling protected by the fact the player isn't allowed to defend himself. I don't care if he called him a piece of crap or a racial term, the 50 bucks he paid for that seat doesn't give him a license to harass someone, and Smart's scholarship shouldn't force him to have to put up with that.

Dozens of people? Where did you read that? What are their names and will there be anybody follow up to question those people? Were their statements taken under oath? Who did the investigation, the university or an independent agency? So many questions about this investigation and who do you think in Lubbock will want answers? Do you know Oky State's side of this? And you seem to be basing some of your opinion on Smart from an article from a guy who wouldn't even give him any credit for passing up millions last year to stay in school another year to play for the cowboys? I don't recall in the article where Smart admitted he had been out of control for weeks. Frustrated, yes, with the loss of teammates, his own injury, and the way the season is going. Mel Ejim had a flagrant foul, does that make him out of control too? And where has anybody, at least myself, said they believe Smart instead of the university? I've said I don't know, especially since we haven't even heard Oky State's side of this that has been sent to the Big 12 office. There's also the very real possibility that Smart thought he heard a racial slur during the melee, even if there was none, but some won't even consider that, willing to call him a liar and a piece of crap almost from the beginning, and even after his humble apology in front of the cameras. Will Orr apologize in front of the cameras? Some have judged and convicted Smart, called him names, and consider no possibility that he might have heard a racial slur or thought he heard a racial slur, so I get the picture. We're now just beating a dead horse.

I think that's exactly what happened...whether or not it was said he thought it was said...if you read his lips as he's being pulled away by his team mates you can see he says, "don't call me a n".

Not going to hate on the guy if that's what he heard or thought he heard...

So because I don't see racism everywhere, that makes me a racist?

And don't be so sure I wouldn't say anything when confronted by something wrong. I called out your misuse of the race card, didn't I?

You don't even know what the race card is......you're just playing the 'denial card.'

Okay, so it's been "established" that Popeye called Smart a piece of poopie but what did the two Sea Hags standing on each of him say? They look to be flapping jaws and I am guessing it isn't "Hey sweetie , would you be nice enough to get yourself back on the court. Please and thank you!".

In "Smarts" mind they are probably already burning crosses. I feel bad for the kid if every time he makes a mistake he hears voices calling him racially charged names.

Must be tough to function.

As far as saying mean things to players I agree there is a line - I would not draw it at piece of crap though.

Bad behavior seems to be a big part of "fandom" (and seemingly encouraged by some schools). Surprised there aren't more "incidents".

Again, just open your ears the next time an opposing player comes into Hilton and does something that ISU fans don't like. At the end of last year's Kansas game @ISU, vulgar screams rained down from the stands, items were thrown onto the floor, a booster had to be restrained by security from going after the Kansas head coach and racial comments and death threats were sent to a Kansas player via Twitter. You REALLY cannot fathom any "good reason" for a fan to drop an expletive at an opposing player? It seems as if some ISU fans need no better reason than "because I don't like what just happened." It's mind boggling to watch fans get so holy on this.

I would say include you in that last sentence. EVERY fan base has it's share of butthead fans -- including Kansas -- so don't go Jiminy Cricket here.

The way that these athletes run their mouths and trash talk, being the recipient of a "piece of crap" comment shouldn't be an unexpected thing on their parts. The culture is just more polarized and coarse than even 20-30 years ago, and very different from 60-70 years ago, so we shouldn't respond with such shock and dismay. You will hear this and worse I suspect at nearly every arena around the country in the heat of conference play, including Hilton, particularly around the hot dogging and show boat players. Would I do it? No. Am I surprised and appalled that it happens? No.

This ain't the 1940's Hoosiers atmosphere anymore. Society has changed and so have the athletes. The environments are much harder on the players when things 'go bad' and the upside is that when things 'go right' they are worpshipped as modern day demi-gods. You want to be Perseus - then expect some slings stones and arrows.

Do I think this Jeff Orr guy is a doosh? Yes. Do I think he's unique in our modern fan sports culture? Not at all. We wouldn't even know about the guy if Smart hadn't lost it and gone off on him. The reason any of us know about him is because Marcus Smart is an immature, hot-headed mental midget, who was dumb enough to go into the stands after a fan. He's clearly got a lot of growing up to do, and the upside for him is that he's and young and can grow from it. This Jeff Orr guy is who he is and isn't likely to change much.

If anything, this may serve some longer term good by highlighting sportsmanship and codes of conduct, but in a few weeks and months no one will really care, I suspect. We'll be back to jackwagon showboaters, talking trash and egging on opposing fans from the court, and those fans will respond in kind, with vulgarities, insults and worse, 99.9% of which we will never see and hear. In order to clean up things like this in sports, we would first have to start cleaning up the culture at large, and that isn't likely to happen. Social entropy: most of these social structures are bridges being burned up behind us as we cross them. It is what it is, and probably won't be getting better over time, if that people's expectations.

The difference being that I am not on here blasting a fan for poor behavior, acting like it doesn't happen where I cheer.

The only good that will come out of this is that it forced a lot of coaches to remind their teams that under no circumstance is it ever OK to even interact with opposing fans. Knuckleheads will always be knuckleheads, especially in the anonymous space of an arena where they are rarely identifyable individually.
