While I generally agree I also don't think we should say it doesn't matter if you lie we will protect your identity. It kind of is like the referee thing. While we want to protect them from retaliation we also don't want to not hold them responsible for their actions.

There really isn't a great way to do it.

Arresting her or suing her would accomplish that (holding her responsible for her actions). Until that point, identifying her publicly serves no good purpose. Those who know her and/or Bubu already know her name. The internet does not need to know it. If anyone has a case for dragging her name into it at this point, it would be Bubu, and that doesn't appear to be his intent right now.

I hope he does take her to court. Regardless of whether Bubu has forgiven her or not, her actions should be taken seriously. Lying about something like this should be a serious crime with a serious penalty.

Clarification from ISU regarding Bubu's ability to transfer:

So we just got this from ISU. Make of it what you will:

The information below is a clarification from Iowa State University.
Jan. 23, 2014
CLARIFICATION ON TRANSFER ISSUE IN PALO CASE
Recent published accounts have suggested that Iowa State University delayed a decision in the student conduct case of Bubu Palo, which prevented Palo from being able to transfer to a different institution. The following information is being provided in an effort to provide clarification on the transferability issue.

  • The Iowa State University President’s Office provided notification to Matt Boles (the attorney for Palo) on Aug. 21, 2013, that President Leath’s decision would be provided within 10 days. Boles acknowledged receipt of the notice, and did not raise any concerns with respect to the decision timeline.
  • President Leath issued his decision on August 30th.
  • There is a process, within the NCAA governance structure, that allows for student-athletes to transfer to other institutions. That process is available to student-athletes seeking a transfer even after classes have begun at their present institution.
  • After the August 30th decision, Boles contacted Athletics Director Jamie Pollard to ask if Iowa State would support a waiver to transfer. Pollard shared with Boles that both President Leath and he would support a waiver to the NCAA. After that point, neither Palo nor his attorneys ever provided Iowa State University with an official transfer request.

Dear ISU,

When you don't mess things up to begin with, you don't have to send out "clarifications" in regards to those mess ups. Whoever said you should send this out should be stripped of their responsibilities immediately as they apparently have no clue about PR.

And I agree with that. A case like this spills over and contaminates public opinion, and makes it harder to prosecute rape cases. However, shaming her on social media might make rape victims less willing to file complaints for fear that they will not be believed. It's a fine line...on one hand you have people who may be falsely accused spending years trying to reclaim their reputation, on the other hand you have women afraid to come forward because a sharp lawyer can poke holes in her reputation, and make it sound like she "deserved" it, or "asked" for it.

The "free love" espoused by my generation has become very expensive.

I think they should fire Dean Wormer...

Can we please stop asserting "Fred doesn't want him"? Fred could have refused to renew the scholarship (and given it to Amardi - think about that), or removed him from the team for disciplinary reasons. He didn't do that. Since those decisions would have not been subject to judicial appeal, this whole dumpster fire would not have happened. He didn't remove Bubu, and he isn't defying JP & Leath publicly. Let's all respect his position here.

I realize that few people are asserting that Fred wants to be rid of him, but I think we should go the extra mile to acknowledge that he has zero responsibility for this mess.

Dear Bubu:
They handed you an easy way through this.
You took the harder way.
Thank you very much for the no-win situation.

Dear ISU Administration:
Start with the clarification. Put the ball in the other guy's court to deal with.

I agree Fred has played no part in this mess. Unfortunately he and the team are becoming innocent victims of this trainwreck.

Nice. BuBu is falsely accused of sexual assault, misses most of his junior season, the charges are dropped because the girl lied, he's back on the team and everything's cool (he even says he's forgiving the girl), the girl uses ISU officials to get BuBu kicked off the team again, but BuBu has put us in this no win situation? Unbelievable.

Just because ISU would support that waiver does not mean it would be granted by the NCAA.. nor would it be as easy to obtain a landing spot as if leath had ruled much earlier if this was a clear violation.

So the easy way is to be reinstated, but then for no reason being booted after the fall term has began?

No, the easy way have been to boot him last year, instead of ever lifting the suspension.

An "opportunity" to maybe get a waiver (if the NCAA actually approves it) to another school, this late in the game when most openings would have been filled.... is not 'an easy way through this'

It all begins with his actions. ISU has a ton of failure in this, but it's Bubu's baby. He can go now.

His actions? What actions? The ones that were claimed by someone who has zero credibility due to the person making the claim being a proven liar about this case?

I wouldn't be so sure that Bubu actually knew that they would allow a transfer. That statement sounds like a cover your *** type of thing for Iowa State.

The only good news is the news that maybe they decide tomorrow.
