ISU Alert System has actually been used

how old is his phone? Don't all phone alarm clocks still go off when the ringer is on silent?
mine has an alarm setting, mutes all noises but the alarm. My phone is a pretty basic non-smartphone though.

Its about four years old and free with the plan. That's what the whole family's phones are cause we are cheap and sending multiple kids to school. Its got one volume control for the phone.

Woke me up at 4:30 but was in such a daze of what was going on that I let it go to voicemail. Listened to the message soon after that and heard the guy was dangerous and carrying around a branch. Seriously? A branch?

I know ISU does not treat these things lightly, so they probably had additional information that warranted using the system.

I did find the branch part funny as well, but, again, with the very high likelihood a Design student could be coming/going right at that location (at anytime, really) it seems like a legit use of the system. Imagine if they didn't and someone got assaulted, robbed, etc walking home?

I listened to the voicemail this morning. First a guy said the message and then a woman said it except she said nine hundred eleven instead of telling us to call 911.

Here at NC State our emergency alert system gets used all of the time. I get both a text and an email, and there's a speaker system that announces emergencies on campus.

We get notifications at least once or twice a month. I think there's been a robbery, rape, assault, etc. just about every other day since dead week started. I can't wait for the semester to end so the criminals go away once the undergrads go home.

Find it very humerous that people like you want to complain about something that is being used to keep people safe and alerted.

Just think of what CycloneFanatic would have been like today if the alert didn't go out?

The "Smiley Face Killer Beats Design Student Half to Death With Tree Branch" thread would be at least 100 pages by now with different crackpot theories.

NRA released a statement on this incident: "The only way to stop a bad guy with a branch is a good guy with a branch."

Not to change the subject, but a few weeks ago I was at a bar for happy hour after work (Twin Cities) and my phone started ringing/vibrating.

I looked at the message and it was an amber alert. Suddenly, almost everyone's phone in the bar started ringing/ vibrating. It was quite the sight/experience.

Amber alert must be able to push messages to every phone based on a specific geography of the towers....pretty cool, but I had no idea that was something that could happen.

The little girl was found within minutes of the alert based on the vehicle description.
