Fred's Offense (Warning: Graphic Content)

And people wonder why we tend to shoot more free throws than we should. This is exactly why. We don't settle for the 17 foot jumper. It's either a 3 or a drive in the lane inside the paint.

ESPN the Magazine did a story on this. It was about James Harden, and why he is so efficient. The vast majority of his shots are layups, or 3's. If you should a decent % of 3 pointers, and make your layups, the offense is much more efficient than you will get shooting mid-range jumpers.

That was the only one i could find, this one is better, though I don't know how he found it

Thanks for finding this

Easy. Go to scores on ESPN. Find a game that is currently being played and click on gamecast Once the gamecast is open, at the bottom click on view all scores, select Big 12, select ISU vs OU and there you are. Or you can just click on the link in my above post.

But the mid-range jumper is probably the most inefficient shot in basketball. With a three pointer, if you shoot 100 2 point shots at 45%, you only get 90 points. If you shoot 100 3 pointers at 37%, you get 111 points. Note that these are our percentages. Also note that inside shots are the second most efficient, after 3 pointers, because the percentage is higher. Technically, the mid-range jumper is a higher percentage shot, but not near as efficient as close shots or 3 pointers

Agreed. Sports Illustrated had an article a few issues ago about the Houston Rockets new money ball approach to basketball. The big reason they targeted Harden in free agency was his shooting efficiency. He either took 3-pointers or close to the hoop. He avoids the mid-range jumper.

Edit: Here is a link to the article...

Either way, Fred is playing the moneyball of college bball right now. Playing the numbers, and that keeps us ahead of possibly more talented teams.

That just illustrates what this team would be capable of if we had a guy who could consistently hit the mid-range jumper.

There really isn't a place in this offense for long two unless it's an iso situation. The whole offense is predicated on spacing to give opportunities to drive and kick or drive and score or drive and dish.

I don't disagree, but it would be nice to at least have that in your arsenal. I'd like to see that same graphic with misses included.

I get what you're saying and I suppose it's right but in our offense it doesn't add anything. If you have guys setting up for mid range jumpers, you are squeezing the floor. Yeah, in isolated situation it would be nice but our offense simply doesn't produce good looks at mid range jumpers. Everyone always says it's a lost art but that's just because it's the lowest return shot out there. If I coached, I would run something very similar to what Hoiberg is doing. Teams have to defend the extremes all at once and that is so difficult to do.

I always wondered what a short stubby coach like Matty A was for, now I know, he is the moneyball guy :jimlad:
