How concerned should we be?

Come on. There is a reson why every single recruiting site dropped him out of their top 10 into the realm of the unrated. That and the fact that pretty much every program, including ISU, pulled their offers. People on this board are acting like he is Nick Collison.

Do you think the reason could be because of a major knee injury that is taking him about 2 years to recover from would have anything to with that?

I think we'll be fine. Lucious obviously still has to workout a lot of stuff, but last year's team figured it out, then Lucious and this year can too.

As for Ejim, people are being way too hard on him, since he was in foul trouble, he never really got into a groove. And Clyburn, he obviously played poorly, but I don't think there was a point where he wasn't trying or playing hard. Also, remember that he was playing the point when we started the 1st half run, which wasn't all just Niang, although it seemed like it

Dont let these guys get you down, I have heard some of the same things. Everyone couldnt get away from him fast enough but yet, why would coaches of major D1 schools know anything. Peter Jok is the next Glen Worley, overrated initially then underachieving the rest of his life.

It was not just the knee injury. He never improved his game. He was a guy that won with raw athleticism. He lost that. He can shoot, and Iowa needs shooters. But he will have trouble defending any position on the court.

Recruiting services make a living doing what they do. Jok appears to have chronic knee problems. Could he make a full recovery? Sure, but he is no AP. It took him two years to get back to any level of play. HE has a ways to go before he looks like the 5 star everyone here is mistaking him for.

Iowa actually beat some really good teams last year with a far worst team. It sucks losing to Iowa and losing most of our competitive preseason games again, but it's really not that concerning to me. Just gotta find a few road wins the rest of the way.

This I agree with.

I have no problem with Fran giving him a scholarship, very little risk that could turn into a huge reward .

Yeah, considering Clemons and Gesell are both freshman, along with Oglesby and Uthoff, they can definitely afford the risk.

How exactly does one improve their game when they spend a considerable amount of time on crutches? He's not a lazy kid in the least. He lives for the game. The knee injury robbed him of his speed and explosiveness. It has slowly been coming back. He literally feels better by the week and it shows. Once again you seem to just be making things up and not addressing the issue's that lead to all this.

Big programs don't have time to wait around for the Joks of the world so it only makes sense they looked elsewhere. And obviousy a recruiting service can't keep him high in their rankings--he was crippled by the knee injury and couldn't play much. McCaffery had one ride to give and he could afford to be patient with it given their young roster.

I don't fault Freddie at all for moving on, BTW. That was not me being critical. I brought Jok up simply because he is talented Iowa is adding him to the mix next year. He may not be a 5 star but he's a 4.

I really like our team and our coaching staff. I just don't like what is going on in Iowa City. There is a good coach and there is energy--both for the first time in some 15 years. I don't think that is good for us.

Here's what bothers me most about Hoiberg's ISU teams thus far... he said we were going to run, we were going to pressure, get turnovers, and fastbreak. We don't do any of that.

Iowa comes out and pressures us half the night, creates a ton of turnovers, fastbreaks on us, gets dunks on us, etc. And we walk the ball up and play half court uninspired ball all night long.

That is what frustrates me the most. Both Fred and Fran promised a high octane, fast paced style of ball, but only Fran has delivered that.

That bothers me, too, although I haven't worried too much about it until this season — and I don't worry too much when results are OK.

Obviously in Year 1, there wasn't enough depth to have much chance to do it.

Last season, I think Hoiberg found an approach that worked better anyway, with the personnel.

This year there's plenty of depth and roster makeup that seems well-suited for that philosophy. Frustrating (and more noticeable), when the opponent does it effectively against us and we can't do it.

I have a few guesses why Hoieberg hasn't gone more that way yet this year, but I'll see where things go.

Babb and Niang and Gibson made for a nice accelerated ride.

Tyrus and Melvin were on idle.

The rest did not start their motors.

He can't run because we don't have much in the way of ball handlers. Lucious is out of control. Ejim can't dribble. Babb has problems off the dribble. Clyburn looks uncoordinated with the ball in his hands much of the time.

This is 100% correct. We have no one that inspires any confidence when in the open court. When we have a 3 on 2, or 2 on 1, we rarely convert. You can watch almost any game on TV, and you see guys dunking, taking it to the hoop, finishing, we never do that. Seemed like every time Iowa had a fast break it ended in a dunk, or foul. We always turn it over, fumble the ball, or double clutch and miss the bunny without getting fouled.

That might be 25 turnovers a game then.

Who cares about Peter Jok? Start a new thread to talk abou this crap.

MM, Naz, Jones, Thomas, SDW, Custer...... We'll see a faster pace in the future. Right now, we barely have one guy that can dribble under pressure.

he's barely a 3 probably a 2, he may be playing well in his 3 games this year but the bball talent in iowa is so poor it can make those guys look like 4 or 5, fact of the matter is he averaged 10 ppg last season which i could probably do in the ciml, for reference I'm 6'2" and played the 4 I would probably the 2nd or 3rd tallest player on the court in most ciml games

It's December 7th. So, no.
If this team looks like they did tonight around mid-January, then probably, because those games matter.

If this team turns out to be good, this game won't matter. If this team ends up not being good, this game won't matter.

Throwing Fred Hoiberg around in his 3rd year of coaching, ever, doesn't help things.

It looked encouraging for Iowa fans to feel like they know what a sort-of loud arena sounds like.
