It was really amazing to see how fast he fell once he left that pod.
And then when they showed him going 700ish mph how he was flipping and tumbling through space, that had to be a scary feeling.

I think that was on purpose to slow his speed down. But yes absolutely incredible! Would be very scary!

I assume the speed of sound is lower at that altitude because of the lower resistance?

Well, 761mph is speed at sea level. Where he was the speed of sound was thought to be in the 600-700 range. We'll have to wait for verification.

But that may have been supersonic based on his altitude. I don't know what it is that high up, but its probably less than 761 because of the lack of air pressure.

Looks like you're right:

Baumgartner will break the speed of sound (about 690 miles per hour at that altitude)
