Something to break the nerves? (For Surgery)

Well tomorrow is my surgery for my colon (see colonoscopy and surgery recovery threads.) And I've never had a surgery before and I'm nervous as all get out. It doesn't help that I'm having it at 19 which is exceedingly young to have this type of surgery....

What helps you break the nerves? And I can't have alcohol, I asked that already :v_SPIN:

I've been there. Had a malignant tumor (leiomyosarcoma) removed when I was just 37. Surgery sucks, but it's much better when you're young, (and at 19 you're really young) so your recovery time should be a breeze.

You'll get the good drugs before they put you under, and these will totally relax and calm you down. If you can, have a couple friends/family members accompany you. They can keep your mind off things right up until you go into the O.R. Good luck...

Surgery really isn't that bad. The worst part of the anesthesia is when they put the IV in your arm. When they knock you out, they'll tell you to start counting backwards from 100 and you'll be out cold before you reach 90. The next thing you'll remember is waking up in the recovery room. I've been put out for surgery 4 times now, and the worst thing I've had happen has been puking my guts out when I woke up post-surgery for 3/4 times. But even if that happens, you'll still be so high from the drugs at that point that you will not care.

Yep I got sick after the surgery I had as well, probably from the gas being pumped into you. Plus you burp that **** up all the time afterwards and it tastes horrible. I also find it funny that they tell you to count back from 100 when they really only need to tell you to count back from 5.

July is rough for surgery. Highest number of errors and complications likely related to new residents and staff turnover that occurs at that time.

So how did everything go? Are you still among the living?

I am here... had my surgery... hurts like a ***** but the large amounts of pain killers are helping. And When I told them I was nervous they did put something in my IV that helped tremendously.

Now time for the recovery... this is gonna suck.

Glad to hear you made it through OK. Good luck with your recovery!
