Something to break the nerves? (For Surgery)

I dont know what you can do tonight, but when you are in the pre-op "waiting" room, have the anesthesiologist add Valium to your IV. He will if you are legitimately freaked out. You will smile your way into the operating room.

I had to spend the night at a hotel in Des Moines on the day before I departed to Basic Training. The only thing on TV that was worth watching was Full Metal Jacket.

But it worked, I fell right asleep. Maybe you need to just find a nice movie about someone being chopped up in surgery.

Go for the bolo imo.

A few years ago I had surgery for the first time in my life and I was like a scared little girl. They gave me a drug called verced and literally 15 seconds later I didn't give a rip about anything. It's the greatest drug ever invented!

I had surgery in April. Had a big chunk of skin cut out on my belly to remove some skin cancer. I was nervous as hell the night before. Almost on the verge of barfing. You will be fine. In the morning you probably won't be as nervous because you will come to realization its happening no matter what because it has to be done. When I got to hospital I got my IV, wheeled into O.R., got my anesthesia (which feels amazing), you wake up and it's over. Plus you get meds (which are also amazing).

Believe me, when it comes to needles, or anything doctor related, I'm a freakin wimp. The worst part of the whole thing for me was getting the IV. Surgery is the easy part because you are out! Don't stress yourself out. You will be fine.

This! I was pretty nervous before major intestinal surgery but the morning of I was pretty calm. The staff was super professional and by than I was committed and pretty much at ease (it helped that the surgeon that operated on MY doctor was operating on me...pretty good reference!).

Post-surgery Demerol was my friend so I was pretty comfortable (although sort of crabby).

Its 5am... haven't slept yet and I feel like ****... :frown: I have to be at the hospital in 2 and a half hours. This sucks

Once you get there, tell them you are very nervous about the whole thing. Once they get that IV in, they will give you something to calm you down. Everything will be good in the world then.

Surgery really isn't that bad. The worst part of the anesthesia is when they put the IV in your arm. When they knock you out, they'll tell you to start counting backwards from 100 and you'll be out cold before you reach 90. The next thing you'll remember is waking up in the recovery room. I've been put out for surgery 4 times now, and the worst thing I've had happen has been puking my guts out when I woke up post-surgery for 3/4 times. But even if that happens, you'll still be so high from the drugs at that point that you will not care.

This. I had a surgery my junior year of high school. I was nervous as hell going into it. When they put my IV in and then gave me my anesthesia, I remember being wheeled into the operation room then I was waking up to the anesthesiologist saying everything went well. It literally feels like you skipped the next few hours of your life.

This is a great thread and why I love cyclonefanatic. I am heading in for spine surgery in a couple hours and these same thoughts are going through my head. I wasn't supposed to eat after midnight and I was supposed to have a "light supper." So, in my mind, that meant I needed to have a "big" lunch. So yesterday for lunch I went to Smitty's on Army Post Road and had a King tenderloin. I am starting to second guess that decision.

Good luck 2015!

When I had my hernia surgery two years ago she gave put a couple of shots in my IV and said to think of them as a couple of Pina Coladas. Within 5 minutes you are happy to be there.

She came back in the room and asked how I was doing. I said I would love another couple of Pina Coladas. She said she would give me one more.

Of course that was just to get you ready for the real stuff. By then they could give you anything they want and you don't care.

If they use a trach tube while you are under you might have some trouble breathing when you come out of it. They'll put a mask on and you'll breath in some sort of steam that relieves that real quick. If they use a catheter, you'll have some blood and some stinging the next few times you pee.

I agree with this. It's the build up and preparation that is the worst part. Once that needle is in and they start pumping you full of the good stud, all is good in the world.

Good luck 2015! (My Akron brother from an Ohio mother.)
