I am moving to Des Moines and was wondering if anyone had any leads on some decent apartments where I can live. I am working downtown and wanted to live close to there, but what I have found is most of the places are income based housing. I searched online, but haven't had much luck. I would appreciate some leads if people on here have any suggestions on good places to live. Thanks!

I moved here last year and got an apt at Westpointe in Urbandale. There is an express bus from the ice arena to downtown. The drive can be a pain if you need to commute but not bad. Great place with indoor/outdoor pool, par 3 golf course and fitness center.

Damn, do you mind if I ask around how much that runs you? Indoor/outdoor pool seems like it would be pretty costly. PM would work if you'd rather do that.

Kind of depends on what you are looking for. When I first took a job in DSM a few years ago, a buddy and I moved into Boulder Ridge in West DSM. Were pretty decent apartments. Then we looked into Washington Manor which is right in front of Boulder Ridge. Good 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom with washer and dryer provided in each unit. Outdoor pool. And its real quick to jump on 80/235, and a quick little drive to downtown. But they started raising rent, and my roommate got engaged and moved in with his fiance, so I lucked out and found a random place through Craigslist.

For downtown renting look into the Metro Lofts and Vine Street Lofts. The Fleming Building is also opening up soon, though that could be a bit yet.

Thanks for the updates. Keep them coming. Just trying to find a nice place for under $800/month, but that seems to be tough and everyplace I get a recording. If you have any more suggestions please send them my way, it helps me with my search

sounds like youre basically in the same situation as me. Ideally I would like to be in the east village area but with about the same budget as you it doesn't seem like a 1 bedroom is going to happen. A while back I rented a room in Altoona, but now I'm looking to move and am not having much luck. I thought I had a roomate lined up but that fell through. I am about to start looking on the west side, but that is far from ideal. Let me know if you find any good places.

I lived at Pointe West in WDM. Very nice and close to interstate for easy commute. It has everything you would want or need.

I used to live in East Village Square and really liked it there. If you want cheap places with alot of character, check out the Sherman Hill area. There are alot of one bedroom apartments under $700, hardwood floors and walking distance from anything you need. I wouldn't recommend going anywhere west of 63rd.

I lived in 3 different places downtown and only would not reccomend 1 of them and that is the lofts that are above dos rios. They are nice and all and seem like a good deal.

However, the problem with them as well as most other newer places down town is the tennants that income restriction attracts. I dont have a problem with poor people, but these arent your typical poor people. They are mostly loudass 20 some yr olds that stay up all night and act like its their first time from home. Puke everywhere ect.

After I lived there I moved into the Plaza and that was awesome, I went from 20 yr olds to rich *** 80 yr olds. That was great except for the fact I was always having to move old ladys furniture.

Lived in Boulder Ridge in WDM 9 years ago. Right off 235. Don't know what the rent is now but then we had a 2BR 900+ sq ft for $550/mo.
