"They've really classed the Red Man up in recent years, but its certainly witnessed its share of power drinking."
I see you are a Klosterman fan. In one of his books, he describes Midwestern Power Drinking. He says something like, "you have to move fast, you have to stay focused, and you have to swallow constantly." Good stuff.
Starting a fight in Stacyville cuz you don't like the "rich snobs" from STA. That's some solid logic right there.
This thread is making me homesick - anyone got a link to the article about the guy who took a combine on a drunken joy ride?
That quote used to be my sig line here. Its so true.
Yeah, I never got how some of those Riceville kids saw STA as rich snobs, but whatever. In all fairness, it does seem to be a more affluent town, but the people aren't snobby by any stretch.
Regarding the drunken combine joy ride, a bunch of my buddies sent the link to that story when it happened just sure it was one of my family's combines that had been involved in the whole thing. I went home about 2 days later to help with harvest for a day, and you could see his little path of destruction along the highway just south of McIntire.

"Rich Snobs" from St. Ansgar makes me laugh because the fights usually ended up with more osage or stacyville kids in it than anyone else.
The Carpenter Bar and Grill has been reopened for a few years now and is under new management. The place is really nice and has great food. The shrimp are amazing and Ty normally sells out of them on friday nights.
Always good times in the county. Ive enjoyed living here for the majority of my life and its always fun to discuss things with others from the area.
Good to hear. A town like Carpenter needs a good tavern and place to grab a bite to eat.
I'm definitely getting homesick as well. If I don't go to the bowl game, I'll be up in Lime Springs (I realize this isn't actually Mitchell County, but close enough) as one of my best friends from back home's band is playing the bar for NYE. They played the night before Thanksgiving and it was a god damn blast.

Al-I have so salute you Iowa region and country cultural knowledge. It's amazing really that you have just about every area of Iowa pegged.
It's just a product of having friends and family scattered around the state more than anything. A lot of my good buddies from college are from the Lakes area, and I have a few from SW Iowa and Sioux City. My dad went to ISU with a bunch of guys from the rural Iowa City (Kalona) area, and I'm close to their kids too. I grew up in Mitchell County, and my fiance is from farther east of there.
Really, the only parts of the state I haven't just happened to spend time in are south central Iowa and the "Eastern Seabord" of the state.
