The problem with those 'census' numbers is they dont show the degree of fandom. You call up any random group of people, and you'll probably hear 'yeah, im a fan of *local team here*'. What they dont show is how passionate that fandom is. For instance, many may answer they're a fan of Illinois, but be much more interested in the Bears. Or they may be a fan but by no means fan enough to be willing to drop the kind of cash needed for a bowl trip (or on season tickets). On the other hand, you may have a smaller number that identify themselves as fans of another school, but they may be on the whole more passionate fans of that school willing to put up the money for tickets and bowl trips.

Those are good points, but what TV networks care about are how many fans will watch the game. This still doesn't answer that, but there will be many more that watch than those that go to the games.

yup, there's a couple of critical flaws with this and with Nate Silver's/NYTimes stats. It only takes into account one year's polling. In any given year, a team's following is highly dependent on how good the team is on the field. You'd have to do this same analysis over several years to get a real analysis. It also suffers from the "single school" idea. Just because I'm a fan of ISU doesn't mean I can't also be a fan of another school (or maybe up to 5 schools that I'm willing to carve time out of my schedule to watch on TV). And finally, conference affiliation drives fandom, Most fans will watch any game in their conference because it has bearing on their team's standing or season outcome.

Yeah... and that's why mizzou has options. But also why Mizzou gets slighted come bowl time.

Is it embarrassing that you lose out on bowl games to school with less than half the amount of fans?

No...not really. Like I said before, I don't care if Mizzou brings 50,000 fans or 50 to line the pockets of some southern locale. Personally, I'd rather travel to a reg. season road game ANY day.

If it ain't the nat'l championship game, it's just another bowl game. And the Insight.com Bowl AIN'T the championship game.

You judge a team based on W-L record, and who they play. Anyone want to argue that ISU was a better team than Mizzou in 2009?

I wonder what this statement means...Whatever info it was, it apparently put TCU over the top.

TCU Horned Frogs meeting to discuss Big 12 invite - ESPN Dallas
According to a Big 12 source, the conference got more "expert information about fit/value/enhancement to our league," late Wednesday. The Big 12 knew of TCU's keen interest.
"There wasn't any reason to wait if we knew it would be the right choice," said the source, who added that "additional expansion is still possible."

I too, wonder what the **** that means.

Did you say the same thing when KU jumped you for the Orange Bowl?

What it means is that the Big 12 went to their media partners at ABC/ESPN and Fox and said, "If we add this team or that team do we get to keep your money?" and in the case of TCU, the TV guys said OK.

So with the addition of TCU as a replacement, this finally ends the saga of Aggy to the SEC, right?

Right?

I, for one, welcome our new amphibian over lords.

Dear Mizzoulander,

I was just wondering if you saw this tidbit by the KU beat writer earlier today...I think it validates my point about going to the SEC hurting your Texas recruiting ties...

Tale of the Tait | Fan blogs | KUsports.com
That's the other thing Missouri has to think about here. If they go to the SEC, they can kiss their recruiting ties to Texas good bye.

Here's an interesting note from the past about that. Years ago, when Arkansas and UT were in the SWC together, the Razorbacks had an average of 40 players from Texas on their football roster. In the years that followed after Arkansas left for the SEC and Texas joined the Big 12, Arkansas' list of football players from Texas on the roster dropped to below 10 on average.

That said, I've never thought Missouri was leaving and I still don't think they are. They had a chance to take their moment in the spotlight and feel the love and then return to the league in good graces and they blew it. Had they announced Tuesday that they were committed, the league would've smiled and said, 'Welcome back.'

But sources have told me that what MU pulled on Tuesday really angered a lot of the league and now if the Tigers come back, they'll do so with their tails between their legs and having lost a lot of their clout within the league. They'll also be a complete afterthought now that the Big 12 has moved ahead with expansion.

Missouri had a chance to play this thing right and gain a lot of love but they waited just a bit too long and now will be forced to do some serious damage control if and when they do recommit to the Big 12.

Why the heck would you rather go to a regular season road game than a bowl game? I guess if you enjoy hostile environments...which would explain your continued appearances in this thread.

2009 Iowa state went to the better bowl, 2008 it was Kansas? If your point is, Missouri fans only show support in th e post season for national championships, then let me be the first to tell you that is unlikely to ever happen. Missouri may have an option but its not because of fan support and the tv argument is suspect since our game will not be aired, you would think with the 3rd biggest markets you would rank better than Baylor in getting on tv
