I think that if OU and others form their own network for the Tier 3 stuff and once the Tier 1 rights are negotiated, the Big 12 will be even more stable...maybe permanently because:

1) Other conferences won't want to touch the LHN, OU's network, and anyone else with a significant Tier 3 deal.
2) After Tier 1 is reupped for a lot more money, add in the Tier 2 money, and some schools' big Tier 3 money...they won't be able to make more money anywhere else.

This. I'd give you a +1 but out of rep...

The SEC doesnt in spite of that, because they have many advantages as a conference that the big 12 doesnt. Better geography, the best football conference almost every year, a much greater culture of equality within the league (no one like texas making terms for the rest of the conference members).

So Mizzou has said no thanks to the SEC (link) and they supposedly turned down West Virginia for some reason. Who is the SEC's 14th school? Chances are slim, but say they come calling. Stay or go? Would stability and $$ offset losing rivalries and having to fly everywhere?

What's most important is equal sharing on first and second tier rights. That's where the money is at.

The rest of us can create a network. The rules do not favor Texas and OU.

Now that OU can get their network, who will want to leave? Mizzou? Replaceable. The Big East teams and BYU will be dying to join the league right now.

I read somewhere the granting of media rights is 6 years because the ABC contract is over in 2015 and the granting of media rights will be up for extension at that time.

Making the conference more stable by having a Big 10 type model. This would allow real teams to be attractive to the Big 12, this will not happen now. I think if the Big 12 were to adopt a Big 10 type network model, Pitt would be with us instead of the ACC as well as West VA.

OU might be able to get $5MM annually with their own network and Texas can get $15MM. What can the rest of the conference get combined? I had calculations earlier in this thread showing that each school would get (conservatively) $7.2MM annually with a Big 10 type network. Only Texas is hurt revenue wise and you can get some schools here with the attractiveness and large payout.

No, the way Boren explained it was that the signing the media rights over for 6 will extend into the next contract they negotiate/sign. Meaning it shouldn't hurt the conference in negotiating the next Tier 1 deal with ESPN or whoever else is willing to throw big cash at those rights. If someone tries to go, no other conference will want to poach them as they'll not have the rights to their content until that timeframe has expired. My guess is they'll re-commit when the next deal is signed...

Rumors are the the SEC may stand pat at 13 for a while and hope either Mizzou or someone from the ACC comes to them after a while.

The longer the SEC sits at 13 though, the more grumbling you're going to keep hearing out of the SEC.

The problems with having a 13 team league are huge...this read explains a lot of the issues

Guys, lets remember that the 6 year media rights thing is an idea that was discussed. It has not been signed by anybody as of yet.

I think we're getting WVA any way.

Is the ACC using the Big 10 model?

Nope, but they are more stable then the Big 12. I believe Pitt solidified their conference in the same way I think Pitt could have solidified the Big 12.

I know none of us will agree on this, especially this early in the game but it seems in addition to the LHN Texas is retaining more power then they should which is not good for the conference. I know all conferences have the big dogs but I feel at least those small schools get a say in what goes on. I think the newbie CU had a voice in this round of expansion.

BTW folks....there was one...ONE 90 min call to get the process started. I think some of you are expecting a little too much out of one phone call.
The response to this press conference is just amazing -- they agreed to stay together, they will work toward stability. That's a big deal.

Not when you read the Mizzou reaction. I didn't see Deaton's presser but Columbia media is saying no commitment and Deaton said anything's possible still...

Dave Matter is saying the leadership at Mizzou is singing a different tune than Boren ultimately sang....

Mizzou sucks!

If there was a way to put together a KU, KSU, MU and ISU regional network, I would be interested. Probably more for BBall though.

If it's acceptable to OU and OSU, Texas will go for it and you can bet the forgotten five can't get their signatures on the paperwork fast enough.

Texas aTm just left the Big 12 for a conference with the same setup as being discussed. Do you know how much history and rivalry they walked away from there?
